ASTM E18-08A Standard Test Methods for Rockwell Hardness of Metallic Materials

Author: ASTM | Size: 3.7 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: ASTM | Year: 2008 | pages: 37

1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the Rockwell hardness and the Rockwell superficial hardness of metallic materials by the Rockwell indentation hardness principle. This standard provides the requirements for Rockwell hardness machines and the procedures for performing Rockwell hardness tests.
1.2 This standard includes additional requirements in annexes:
Verification of Rockwell Hardness Testing Machines Annex A1
Rockwell Hardness Standardizing Machines Annex A2
Standardization of Rockwell Indenters Annex A3
Standardization of Rockwell Hardness Test Blocks Annex A4
Guidelines for Determining the Minimum Thickness of a
Test Piece Annex A5
Hardness Value Corrections When Testing on Convex
Cylindrical Surfaces Annex A6
1.3 This standard includes nonmandatory information in appendixes which relates to the Rockwell hardness test.
List of ASTM Standards Giving Hardness Values Corresponding
to Tensile Strength Appendix X1
Examples of Procedures for Determining Rockwell
Hardness Uncertainty Appendix X2
1.4 Units - At the time the Rockwell hardness test was developed, the force levels were specified in units of kilograms-force (kgf) and the indenter ball diameters were specified in units of inches (in.). This standard specifies the units of force and length in the International System of Units (SI); that is, force in Newtons (N) and length in millimeters (mm). However, because of the historical precedent and continued common usage, force values in kgf units and ball diameters in inch units are provided for information and much of the discussion in this standard refers to these units.
1.5 The test principles, testing procedures, and verification procedures are essentially identical for both the Rockwell and Rockwell superficial hardness tests. The significant differences between the two tests are that the test forces are smaller for the Rockwell superficial test than for the Rockwell test. The same type and size indenters may be used for either test, depending on the scale being employed. Accordingly, throughout this standard, the term Rockwell will imply both Rockwell and Rockwell superficial unless stated otherwise.
1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

ASTM A934/A934M-07 Standard Specification for Epoxy-Coated Prefabricated Steel Reinforcing Bars

Author: ASTM International | Size: 0.15 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: ASTM International | Year: 2007 | pages: 10

1.1 This specification covers deformed and plain steel reinforcing bars which prior to surface preparation are prefabricated and then coated with a protective fusion-bonded epoxy coating by electrostatic spray or other suitable method.
1.2 Prefabricated steel reinforcing bars coated with fusion-bonded epoxy formulations in accordance with this specification are not intended to be bent or rebent.Note 1
Experience has shown epoxy-coated prefabricated steel reinforcing bars have limited capability to be successfully field bent or rebent (see ). If the construction project requires epoxy-coated steel reinforcing bars that must be able to sustain field bending or rebending, the use of coated bars conforming to Specification A 775/A 775M should be considered.
1.3 Organic coatings other than epoxy may be used provided they meet the requirements of this specification.
1.4 Requirements for epoxy coatings are contained in Annex A1.
1.5 Guidelines for application process and product test procedures of epoxy coatings for steel reinforcing bars are presented in Appendix X1.
1.6 Guidelines for construction practices at the job-site for coated steel reinforcing bars are presented in Appendix X2.
1.7 This specification is applicable for orders in either SI (metric) units (as Specification A 934M) or inch-pound units [as Specification A 934].
1.8 &combined;-units;
This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

ASTM E 1820 - 06 Standard Test Method for Measurement of Fracture Toughness

Author: ASTM International | Size: 0.7 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: ASTM International | Year: 2006 | pages: 48

1.1 This test method covers procedures and guidelines for the determination of fracture toughness of metallic materials using the following parameters: K, J, and CTOD (Оґ). Toughness can be measured in the R-curve format or as a point value. The fracture toughness determined in accordance with this test method is for the opening mode (Mode I) of loading.
1.2 The recommended specimens are single-edge bend, [SE(B)], compact, [C(T)], and disk-shaped compact, [DC(T)]. All specimens contain notches that are sharpened with fatigue cracks.
1.2.1 Specimen dimensional (size) requirements vary according to the fracture toughness analysis applied. The guidelines are established through consideration of material toughness, material flow strength, and the individual qualification requirements of the toughness value per values sought.
1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only.
1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
Note 1 - Other standard methods for the determination of fracture toughness using the parameters K, J, and CTOD are contained in Test Methods E399, E813, E1152, E1290, and E1737. This test method was developed to provide a common method for determining all applicable toughness parameters from a single test.
A14.1.1 This annex covers the determination of the rate dependent JIc(t) and the J-integral versus crack growth resistance curve (J-R(t) curve) for metallic materials under conditions where the loading rate exceeds that allowed for conventional (static) testing, see Section 8.4.2.
A15.1.1 The normalization technique can be used in some cases to obtain a J-R curve directly from a force displacement record taken together with initial and final crack size measurements taken from the specimen fracture surface. Additional restrictions are applied (see A14.1.3) which limit the applicability of this method. The normalization technique is described more fully in Herrera and Landes (21) and Landes, et al. (22), Lee (23), and Joyce (20). The normalization technique is most valuable for cases where high loading rates are used, or where high temperatures or aggressive environments are being used. In these, and other situations, unloading compliance methods are impractical. The normalization method can be used for statically loaded specimens if the requirements of this section are met. The normalization method is not applicable for low toughness materials tested in large specimen sizes where large amounts of crack extension can occur without measurable plastic force line displacement.

ASTM C 1645/C 1645M – 09 Standard Test Method for Freeze-thaw and De-icing Salt Durability of Solid Concrete Interlocking Paving Units1

Author: ASTM Committee C27 | Size: 0.1 MB | Format: PDF | Publisher: ASTM | Year: 2009 | pages: 3

1.1 This test method evaluates the resistance to freezing and
thawing of solid interlocking concrete paving units conforming
to the dimensional requirements of Specification C 936/
C 936M. Units are tested in a test solution that is either tap
water or 3 % saline solution, depending on the intended use of
the units in actual service.
1.2 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units
are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in
each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each
system shall be used independently of the other. Combining
values from the two systems may result in non-conformance
with the standard.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the
safety concerns, in any, associated with its use. It is the
responsibility of the use of this standard to establish appropriate
safety and health practices and determine the applicability
of regulatory limitation prior to use.
