DETAIL is the international journal dedicated to architecture and construction details. Each issue focuses on a particular aspect of design, such as constructing with concrete, roof structures, etc. Emphasis is placed on presenting designs in great detail, and complementing these with drawings in practical scales and superb photographs that illustrate real world examples from near and far.

Base isolation systems for earthquake protection of multi-storey shear structures

Base isolation systems for earthquake protection of multi-storey shear structures

Author: D. M. Lee1, I. C. Medland | Size: 1 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Unspecified | Publisher: Wiley | Year: 1979 | pages: 14

This paper is a study of the effectiveness of a wide range of bilinear hysteretic isolation systems in shielding multistorey 2-D shear structures from earthquake excitations. Important parameters of the isolation system are identified and their effect on structure response noted. It is shown that isolation systems can be constructed which allow the structure proper to remain purely elastic even during very strong ground motions. It is further shown that the shear responses and base displacements of structures on these isolation systems can be accurately estimated from elastic response spectra of the forcing earthquakes.

The philosophy of structure isolation is discussed and an introduction given to the physical devices currently available to provide it.

ASCE Effective Length Spectra for Cross Bracings
Posted by: mybest - 07-21-2012, 11:45 PM - Forum: Journals, Papers and Presentations - Replies (2)

Effective Length Spectra for Cross Bracings

Author: Sayed H. Stoman | Size: 1 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: ASCE | Year: 1989 | pages: 11

General effective length criteria for cross‐bracing systems are formulated. The criteria entail closed‐form analytic relationships for evaluating compression brace critical load and effective length factor K with due consideration of the relative stiffness and end conditions of the tensile diagonal. Effective length spectra curves are generated to elucidate the criteria and to facilitate design application. Results indicate that the effective length is very sensitive to the relative stiffness of the two interconnected diagonals and, depending on brace end conditions, the effective length factor values range from 0.35 to 1.0. Refereed experimental data available in the range agree well with the proposed solution. Application of the criteria will lead to an optimum design and enhance overall structural stability.

ASME Analysis of a Three-Dimensional Tank-Liquid-Soil Interaction Problem
Posted by: mybest - 07-21-2012, 11:29 PM - Forum: Journals, Papers and Presentations - No Replies

Analysis of a Three-Dimensional Tank-Liquid-Soil Interaction Problem

Author: R. Seeber, F. D. Fischer, F. G. Rammerstorfer | Size: 1 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Original preprint | Publisher: ASME | Year: 1990 | pages: 6

A three-dimensional analysis of the dynamic behavior of liquid-filled elastic cylindrical tanks based on flexible grounds, undergoing horizontal and vertical earthquake excitation is presented. The interaction of the ideal fluid with the elastic shell and with the flexible ground yields a problem of linear potential theory which must be solved together with the equations of motion of the shell and of the ground. With the unknown modal shapes of vibration developed in Fourier and in Fourier-Bessel series, the partial differential equations are transformed into coupled generalized equations of vibration by a weighted residual approach. The results show the strong influence of the flexible ground characterized by a remarkable shifting of natural frequencies, by the existence of additional natural frequencies, and by high damping ratios.

  Research possibilities at universities
Posted by: freequo - 07-21-2012, 04:01 PM - Forum: Free Discussion - No Replies

Hello fellows,
I was wondering, here on the forum there are lot's of young engineers and researches.
I was curious, does anyone have any information about job possibilities in geotechnical field. For example, there is University of BBD and it looks some young researcher for some research in landslide mitigation. Something like that.
Best regards

Architecture for a Changing World

Author: James Steele | Size: 103 MB | Format: PDF | Quality: Scanner | Publisher: John Wiley & Sons | Year: November 10, 1992 | pages: 212 | ISBN: 1854901737, ISBN-13: 978-1854901736

Recent social, political and environmental upheavals have had a two-fold effect on the built environment in Third World countries. They have destroyed the traditional cultural structure in rural areas, which has led to homelessness and the marginalization of entire communities, and large-scale urbanization has become a powerful phenomenon of which the Islamic World is very much a part. Such global changes have had a dramatic impact on the jury for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, whose selections for 1992 are presented here. The projects selected this year, which address issues relevant to both the developing and developed world, are economically sustainable, humanistic solutions to difficult problems, and generate a new architectural language. They provide a valuable insight into an alternative design approach for both rural and urban environments. Essays by Suha Ozkan of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture, Mohammed Arkoun, Professor of Islamic Thought at the Sorbonne,Paris, and Arif Hasan, Pakistani architect and planner, place the projects within the context of the major social transition now underway, and an article by the late Hassan Fathy on Contemporaneity in the City provides a historical perspective. Each award-winning project is described in detail by Charles Moore and Selma al-Radi, and they are comparatively reviewed by James Steele, and a brief history of Samarkand, where the awards were presented, completes this volume.
