ACI 533.5: Guide for Precast Concrete Tunnel Segments

ACI PRC-533.5-20: Guide for Precast Concrete Tunnel Segments

| Format: PDF| Quality: Original preprint| Publisher: ACI Committee 533| Year: 5/7/2020| pages: 84 | ISBN: 9781641950978

Categories: Design, Durability, Joints, Precast Concrete

The worldwide trend in construction is toward mechanization and automation. This trend has led to continued rapid progress of mechanized tunneling. Advantages over conventional tunnel construction methods include, but are not limited to, occupational health and safety, faster advance rates, and reducing construction labor requirements. Mechanized tunneling in soft ground using tunnel boring machines is often associated with installing precast concrete segmental lining. However, very little industry-wide guidance has been provided by practice and code organizations. This document provides guidelines for precast concrete tunnel segments, including the most recent developments and practical experience, in addition to information on all aspects of design and construction. These guidelines are based on the knowledge and the experience gained on numerous precast tunnel projects in the United States, and available national and international guidelines often used as industry references.

Keywords:

design; durability; fiber; gasket; joint; lining; precast; segment; tolerance; tunnel.

Prestressing concrete technology is critical to understanding problems in existing civic structures including railway and highway bridges; to the rehabilitation of older structures; and to the design of new high-speed railway and long-span highway bridges. Analysis and Design of Prestressed Concrete delivers foundational concepts, and the latest research and design methods for the engineering of prestressed concrete, paying particular attention to crack resistance in the design of high-speed railway and long-span highway prestressed concrete bridges. The volume offers readers a comprehensive resource on prestressing technology and applications, as well as the advanced treatment of prestress losses and performance. Key aspects of this volume include analysis and design of prestressed concrete structures using a prestressing knowledge system, from initial stages to service; detailed loss calculation; time-dependent analysis on cross-sectional stresses; straightforward, simplified methods specified in codes; and in-depth calculation methods. Sixteen chapters combine standards and current research, theoretical analysis, and design methods into a practical resource on the analysis and design of prestressed concrete, as well as presenting novel calculation methods and theoretical models of practical use to engineers.

Provides procedures for the determination of earthquake actions on structures in New Zealand. It gives the requirements for verification procedures, site hazard determination, the evaluation of structural characteristics, structural analysis for earthquake action effects, the determination and limits for deformations and the seismic design of parts of structures. It is to be applied in conjunction with AS/NZS 1170 parts 0, 1, 2 and 3. Appendices cover aspects of ultimate limit state design and the requirements for material specific structural design standards that are able to be used in conjunction with NZS 1170.5. This standard is used by structural engineers to assess and calculate the forces and deformations from earthquakes acting on structures such as buildings and other structures. It helps engineers design structures that comply with the New Zealand Building Code’s earthquake resistance requirements.

NZS 4297: Engineering design of earth buildings

| Format: PDF| Publisher: Standards New Zealand| Year: 2020

the New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) and has given guidance to designers, builders, owner-builders and others involved in the construction of successful earth walled buildings in New Zealand, and elsewhere around the world. There has been no failure reported to date of any earth building built in accordance with this suite of standards. Earth walled construction continues to be relevant at a time when the sustainability and decarbonising of the built environment is under scrutiny. Earthen materials are minimally processed, have low toxicity, and are available locally. This will encourage and enable the uptake of local earthen materials with very low embodied energy within a decarbonising building industry. The revised standard continues to be a core resource and reflect advances in earth building practice, research, changes in referenced standards, and changes in building legislation: the Building Act 2004 and the New Zealand Building Code.
