"Encyclopedia of Earthquakes and Volcanoes, Third Edition" brings the excitement of an ever-changing field of science to the fore-front. With the increase in natural disasters in recent years, the burgeoning world population is clearly expanding faster than our disaster reduction technology. This new edition provides a single source on historical earthquakes and volcanic eruptions from throughout the world. Updated with the most current information, this illustrated resource includes not only new geologic events, but also as many examples of historical earthquakes as possible for contrast or comparison. Coverage in the Middle East has been significantly expanded to include recent natural disasters, as well as events such as landslides and avalanches. Also, many tables were added to supplement the content and put the recent disasters into historical context.

Binders for Durable and Sustainable Concrete (Modern Concrete Technology Series) by P-C AitCin

Binders for Durable and Sustainable Concrete (Modern Concrete Technology Series) by P-C AitCin
Publisher: Routledge | August 20, 2007 | ISBN: 0415385881 | Pages: 528 | PDF | 12.7 MB

Modern hydraulic binders can be used effectively with Portland cement and supplementary cementitious materials to produce durable concrete. They also provide a means of recycling by-products from other industries and of decreasing the emission of greenhouse gases.

The first binders were discovered in ancient times when it was observed that new pozzolans mixed with lime could harden under water; and in the middle of the nineteen century the first artificial hydraulic binder, Portland cement, was discovered. By modifying the four basic oxides in the limestone and clay mix used in the production of Portland cement it is possible to modify significantly the practical properties of the clinker, and consequently the performance of the fresh and hardened concrete in which it is used.

Chemical admixtures can be used to disperse cement particles without the use of extra water, and so make concrete which is highly resistant to penetration by aggressive agents and of high durability and strength. Supplementary cementitious materials or fillers can be mixed with Portland cement to produce modern hydraulic binders and improve the ecological performance of concrete. The hydration process of a modern hydraulic binder is becoming quite complex because it involves the chemical reactivity of Portland cement clinker, of supplementary cementitious materials and of different types of admixtures. This has already resulted in great technological achievements such as high-performance concrete, self leveling concrete, confined concrete, high-performance roller compacted concrete, fiber reinforced concrete, and reactive powder concrete.

Satellite Remote Sensing for Archaeology

info:
320 pages
Publisher: Routledge;
Language: English
Size: 10.2 MB

Edition: (May 12, 2009)

This handbook is the first comprehensive overview of the field of satellite remote sensing for archaeology and of how it can be applied to ongoing archaelogical fieldwork projects across the globe. It provides a survey of the history and development of the field, connecting satellite remote sensing, archaeological method and theory, cultural resource management, and environmental studies. With a focus on the practical use of satellite remote sensing, Sarah H. Parcak evaluates satellite imagery types and remote sensing analysis techniques specific to the discovery, preservation, and management of archaeological sites.
Case studies from Asia, Central America, and the Middle East are explored, including Xi’an, China, Angkor Wat, Cambodia, and Egypt’s floodplains. In-field surveying techniques particular to satellite remote sensing are emphasized, providing strategies for recording ancient features on the ground as observed from space. The book also discusses broader issues relating to archaeological remote sensing ethics, looting prevention, and archaeological site preservation. New sensing research is included and illustrated with the inclusion of over 160 satellite images of ancient sites.
With a companion website with further resources and colour images, Satellite Remote Sensing for Archaeology will provide anyone interested in scientific applications to uncovering past archaeological landscapes with a foundation for future research and study.

The Design Life of Structures

Info:
Author: G. Somerville
Edition: Illustrated
Publisher: Blackie and Son, 1992
ISBN: 0216931770, 9780203168875
Length: 271 pages
Pdf: 3.1 Mb

The whole area of durability, integrity and quality control of structures is starting to be taken very seriously by the construction industry. Central to this is the design life concept, which looks at the materials used, methods of construction, safety factors, maintenance and repair, and change of use, all from a holistic viewpoint. This new book is based on a recent symposium, where leading experts met to discuss this issue and formulate a strategy. In addition, experts from other industries (e.g. aerospace, nuclear), where the design life concept is well established, provided invaluable insights into the problems and benefits of implementing this approach. In total, thirty short contributions are presented in this book, which represents the present state of the art in this field. These are logically structured into five sections, and at the end of each section there is an additional contribution summarising the dialogue or discussion at the symposium - a way of presenting instant feedback to the ideas presented in the contributions.

Hydroblasting and Coating of Steel Structures

Info:
Author: Andreas W. Momber
Edition: Illustrated
Publisher: Elsevier, 2003
ISBN: 185617395X, 9781856173957
Length: 205 pages
Pdf: 5.4 Mb

KEY FEATURES:
• This technique is growing in importance.
• The first comprehensive book in this subject.
A practical and comprehensive account of the technology and applications of hydroblasting, a technique used more and more in the preparation of steel and other surfaces.
Steel surfaces will corrode unless they are properly prepared and coated. Such corrosion can have disastrous effects (eg bridge collapse) therefore the preparation of the surface is of major importance.
Due to environmental pressure to move away from grit-blasting, high-pressure water can now be used to prepare surfaces, with few environmental costs.
This book systematically and critically reviews the state of current hydroblasting technology and its applications. The book is essentially practical in nature and is written by an expert in the field.
