The Landslide Handbook -A guide to understanding Landslides

This handbook is intended to be a resource for people affected by landslides to acquire further knowledge, especially about the conditions that are unique to their neighborhoods and communities. Considerable literature and research are available concerning landslides, but unfortunately little of it is synthesized and integrated to address the geographically unique geologic and climatic conditions around the globe. Landslides occur throughout the world, under all climatic conditions and terrains, cost billions in monetary losses, and are responsible for thousands of deaths and injuries each year. Often, they cause long-term economic disruption, population displacement, and negative effects on the natural environment.

Review (vol1):
This book constitutes the first six chapters of what, with Volume II, is to be a text with a total of 13 chapters. The 6 chapters at hand comprise a careful and focused review of the central concern of the author's research for more than 3 decades: the problems of oscillation and general structural instability induced by the axial flow in and around pipes, the representative paradigmatic example being the "fire hose" or jet-follower instability problem.
While avoiding a claim of exhaustive treatment, the text does in fact offer a very detailed, thorough and exacting analytic and bibliographical coverage of many aspects of axial-flow pipe problems, certainly more than any other text. ... The work is clearly a labor of sustained dedication and care. The author has enlivened it in places with brief anecdotal material from practical situations. As he hints, he does not wish to risk boring the reader. He aims the text at engineers and applied mathematicians, especially researchers and practicing professionals. All of these should welcome it as an unusual, responsible, and highly valuable reference."
-Robert H. Scanlan, Journal of Fluids and Structures
"This book is the first of two volumes that focus on the fundamentals of flow-induced vibrations. Both the causes of vibrations and the symptoms are discussed, along with some long-term preventive measures. The author stresses the benefits of discovering the source of the vibration and solving the vibration problems rather than adding a buffer to reduce vibratory effects. The text begins with a general overview of the topic and a classification of flow-induced vibrations. A brief description of the contents of volume 2 is also given

Review(vol2):
"With the second volume of Fluid-Structure Interaction, Michael Paidoussis has completed a comprehensive and unique two-volume book on fluid-structure interaction in axial flows. Throughout the book the author provides detailed, well-illustrated applications of the subjects treated, some of which are in traditional areas of engineering and some in the rapidly developing new field of bioengineering.

The emphasis is on physical understanding of the problems, and as a result the treatment is biased towards analytical and semi-analytical methods, but comparison with experiments is extensive and systematically provided, using well-thought-out figures, graphs and photographs. Great care is taken to explain several fine points and resolve apparent paradoxes that have been at the centre of controversy over the years.
Theoretical results are always presented side-by-side with detailed and careful comparisons with experiments; this gives great strength to the arguments and derivations. The author possesses an unmatched expertise in the area, and his knowledge of the literature, which spans several decades, and mastery of all developments is impressive. The exposition is very detailed, but at the same time clear, starting from basics and proceeding to the most complex phenomena; the various chapters are self-contained. This book will be a very valuable source for graduate courses on hydroelasticity, where by necessity only subsets of the book can be covered, while it will be an essential reference for workers in the field. The author states that the book has been written for engineers and applied mathematicians; its uniform and systematic treatment of a vast field does indeed provide invaluable service both to engineers and theoreticians.

In conclusion this is the definitive book on hydroelasticity in axial flow, an essential source for the researcher, but also a valuable textbook for the graduate student a very unusual and valuable book indeed. One must marvel at the amount of work and care that must have been devoted to writing such a book - it is a pleasure to read and a rich source of information. It is highly recommended to libraries and as course material."

Chat Section in Header or Footer
Posted by: cheyne - 07-05-2010, 10:22 PM - Forum: Archive - Replies (2)

I know the site is quite strict about replying unnessesarily and chatting. Could we have a AJAX chat section built into the footer for those who want to as questions and fear banning. My phpbb has one and its really simple to install.

You could even have a link to a seperate page if you wanted. Im sure it would help cut down on alot of the banning.

Cant edit the previous post. But here is a link to what my chat mod looks like

PE Exam-Geotech Module-Video Tutorial

INTRODUCTION
To help you prepare for the PE Exam, ASCE and SmartPros, Ltd. have created this multimedia electronic learning course in cooperation with the Boston Society of Civil Engineers Section (BSCES), featuring seven of top civil engineering instructors. The SmartPros, Ltd. team of a dozen instructional designers worked over a period of eight months with the seven BSCES instructors who present the live classroom version of the course. Their goal: to convert the classroom course into an interactive multimedia experience that simulates taking the real-life PE Exam.
This is not a teaching course, it's a review course, a refresher. And this is reflected in its design. First of all, it's up to you to choose the topics you want to review for the exam. These topics are divided into modules, each presenting a series of problems-in exactly the format you will encounter them on the actual PE Exam. The course materials are updated regularly to ensure that they conform to the current PE Exam format and content, and includes the new Construction Supplement for the new construction module that is now part of the PE Exam.
You'll start with a demonstration exam problem. You can call on as much or as little help as you need to solve this problem, including getting the instructor (in full-motion video) to walk you through the problem step by step. Then you'll progress to a practice problem with minimal help available. Finally, you'll take a posttest, where you'll be on your own. Of course, the effectiveness of this type of e-learning is that if you do not pass the posttest, you can simply go back and review the module again, then re-take the posttest. The Construction Supplement is a manual that will explain theory, solutions and sample exam questions.
SCOPE OF THE COURSE
Seven complete modules reflective of the PE Exam sponsored by NCEES

in one package, averaging approximately seven hours of instruction each, for a total of approximately 50 hours of learning based on over 2,500 pages of scripts and storyboards. Each of six modules in the PE exam are covered in the course:Geotechnical; Structural; Transportation; Water Resources and Environmental; Transportation and Construction (new hard copy supplement). Also, there are two bonus sections with Economics and Surveying review as additional resources to help you prepare for the exam. In addition to demonstration and practice problems, there are extensive video instructor walkthroughs of each requirement of a PE Exam situation, accompanied by on-screen displays of the corresponding formulas and equations.
The course also includes electronic versions of all the "visual aids" and reference materials that an engineer might take into the examination. These include complete sets of equations, formulas, graphs, tables, diagrams, and where applicable, video clips of sample tests. The course also incorporates an audio pronunciation glossary of Greek letters and an onscreen scientific calculator, as well as animated models and illustrations of key concepts and processes, such as Consolidation.
