Code of Practice for Safe use of Cranes
Inspection, Testing and Examination

This part of BS 7121 gives recommendations for the pre-use checks, in-service inspection, thorough examination and testing of cranes, including associated equipment, and the means by which tests are to be carried out.
Although this part is not applicable to the testing of new cranes, it does give guidance on safety matters to be observed during these tests within the UK.

BS 7121-3:2000
Code of Practice for Safe use of Cranes
Mobile Cranes

This part of BS 7121 provides recommendations for the safe use of mobile cranes and should be used in conjunction with BS 7121-2, which gives general guidance on inspection, testing and examination of all types of cranes.
Mobile cranes are manufactured in many different forms. Mobility is either by means of road wheels or crawler tracks. Rail-mounted cranes are not covered by this part of BS 7121. Cranes may be fully mobile and able to travel with rated capacity loads suspended (pick and carry), or may be semi-mobile and not permitted to travel with suspended loads.
Semi-mobile cranes include wheeled and crawler-mounted cranes, fitted with stabilizers or
outriggers; and cranes that, due to size and weight, are taken to the work site in parts and assembled at the site. Cranes that are assembled on site to work from a fixed base with outriggers are also covered by this part of BS 7121. Because of their mobility, the cranes covered by this part of BS 7121 can be used for a wide variety of lifting operations in numerous locations. BS 7121-1 provides general advice on planning, management, selection of equipment and personnel, etc., for safe lifting with all types of cranes. This part of BS 7121 provides specific guidance on safety when dealing with the hazards caused by mobility and the diversity of locations for mobile crane lifting operations.

BS 7121-5:2006
Code of Practice for Safe use of Cranes
Tower Cranes

This part of BS 7121 gives recommendations for the safe installation and use of tower cranes, including self-erecting tower cranes. Subjects covered include selection of tower cranes, planning the installation (including site specific design work, e.g. base and ties), erection, extension (including climbing), thorough examination (including testing), maintenance, operation, and dismantling, as well as safety measures to be taken during the execution of all the above functions. It also covers the appropriate selection and training of
personnel involved in the safe installation and use of tower cranes.
NOTE Self-erecting tower cranes have been addressed briefly in this document. It is envisaged that a full treatment will be given in a future publication.

BS 7121-11:1998 Code of practice for safe use of cranes. Offshore cranes

BS 7121-11:1998 gives recommendations for safe use of offshore cranes (including supporting structures affixed to offshore installations), primarily operating in an open sea environment. The following activities are not covered in this part of BS 7121:

- slinging practices;
- crane erection practices;
- use of all non-slewing cranes used offshore [e.g. blowout preventer (BOP) cranes, overhead travelling cranes, gantry cranes, hoists and davits].

BS 7121-13:2009 Code of practice for safe use of cranes – Part 13: Hydraulic gantry lifting systems

This part of BS 7121 gives recommendations for the safe use of hydraulic gantry lifting systems (HGLS). Subjects covered include safe systems of work, management, planning, selection, erection and dismantling, inspection, testing, examination, training, operation and maintenance.
NOTE 1 This part of BS 7121 has been developed along the lines of BS 7121-1 with significant modifications to incorporate HGLS-specific aspects. The modifications include some information contained in the US Specialized Carriers and Rigging Association (SC&RA) document, Recommended Practices for Hydraulic Jacking Systems [6]. This part of BS 7121 is intended to be used in conjunction with BS 7121-2, which provides general guidance on the inspection, testing and examination of all types of cranes.
NOTE 2 Annex A and Annex B give detailed recommendations on the training of HGLS personnel. Annex C provides background information on the BS 7121 series.
