Preliminary design of very long-span suspension bridges

Author: Paolo Clementea, Corresponding Author Contact Information, E-mail The Corresponding Author, Giulio Nicolosib, Aldo Raithelb | Size: don`t know MB | Format: PDF

Abstract

The feasibility of very long-span suspension bridges is analysed. The relation between the geometrical parameters, the load and the material characteristics is first discussed in order to find out the limit value of the span length. An iteration procedure is then proposed to study the main aspects of the structural behaviour in the deflection theory. The results of a numerical investigation allow to state that the behaviour of a very long-span suspension bridge, both in terms of stresses and deflection, is similar to the behaviour of an unstiffened cable, the contribution of the girder being negligible.

Keywords: Suspension bridges; Long-span bridges; Limit span; Deflection theory

Nonlinear inelastic dynamic analysis of suspensionnext termprevious termbridge

Abstract

In this paper, an accurate and efficient numerical procedure is proposed for the nonlinear inelastic time-history analysis of previous termsuspensionnext termprevious termbridgesnext term subjected to earthquake excitations. The proposed procedure includes both geometric and material nonlinearities. The geometric nonlinearities of tower and girder members are taken into account by the use of stability functions, while the geometric nonlinearities of cable members are considered using exact analytical expressions of an elastic catenary. The gradual yielding along the member length and over the cross-section is included using a tangent modulus concept and a refined plastic hinge model. A computer program utilizing Newmark’s average acceleration algorithm with Newton–Raphson iteration is developed. The obtained results are compared with those generated using the commercial package SAP2000 to illustrate the accuracy and computational efficiency of the proposed procedure.
