During recent years the need to develop sites previously considered unsuitable has led to improvements in the adaptability of and range of both pile size and piling applications.
For example, the use of mini-piles to support lightly-loaded structures and industrial machinery is common.
Other important developments include:
1. Increased use of concrete or grout-intruded (continuous-flight auger) piles.
2. Introduction of new and improved piling hammers, vibrators, and method of determining pile response during installation.
3. Importance of noise control during pile installation.
4. Greater appreciation for the need of adequate site and ground investigations, and for improved pile selection and integrity testing procedure.
At an early stage of the project, it is important to be able to select the most appropriate pile type(s) for a given foundation.
This second edition provides a review of piles selection criteria.
