Dear reader,

CSI is using windows telemetry services to harvest client data, software usage.
Trimble is using an external API (one of the best forgot its name) to do global customer fingerprint and usage data harvest.
Autodesk did it since long ago, recently switched the LT to rental only licensing model and requires monthly internet access for reactivation. The 2014 version just quits if the user doesn't agree with the "anonymous" usage report.

Most likely the trend started with gmail beta (2005) when sharing personal information like emails content in exchange for some services became cheap and cheaper each year.

Sadly the great almighty Cloud trend is pushing away stuff from our control into some benefactor hands. (office 365, microsoft servers in cloud, storage, compute)

I really wonder how soon we will start buying the expensive tracing system in our phones, to put that into our heads in exchange for some stupid wallpaper.

Regards,

Telemetry in engineering software?
Can you elaborate, please?

It's Microsoft way of naming the service client.

It goes like this:
- a small piece of code to submit data on application start, end, error and while running (timer based).
- the code submits based on unique ID (called InstrumentationKey check the sample link) for each registered app on Microsoft Azure portal.

Code:

Submited data contains the following:
DeviceID, DeviceLanguage, DeviceModel, DeviceOemName, DeviceOS, DeviceScreenResolution, SessionID, MachineName, Is64Bit, ProcessorCount, CLRVersion, BuildVersion, ProgramLevel, LockingCode, LicenseType, IsLegit, UserName, DomainName, NethworkCard, IsVirtualMachine

About Tekla, I believe it is/was 10duke.

Paid or not, none of the above is hashed, "anonymous data statistics" is a joke actually.

The old times with privacy violation (done by viruses) and companies being sued for abuse are so long gone.
Now it's legal and it's called "new marketing channels on social networking by viral media" :).

Many software are black boxes or black holes of information, and nobody knows the uses of data collected.
As a senior designer of an international company I never recommended software with those data mining, it's an elaborated "legal" spyware.
