This synthesis report summarizes the current practice and research on statistical methods in highway safety analysis. This synthesis report will be of interest to individuals with state transportation departments and with district and local agencies involved directly with safety analysis in highway jurisdictions, as well as to contractors undertaking safety analysis and associated work for them. Highway safety analysts in many countries around the world might also find this synthesis of interest. The focus of this report is on the type of safety analysis required to support traditional engineering functions, such as the identification of hazardous locations and the development and evaluation of countermeasures. Analyses related specifically to driver and vehicle safety are not covered, but some statistical methods used in these areas are of relevance and are summarized where appropriate.
