In addition to the design recommendations, the publication includes some details of the Cardington tests. These natural fire tests on the eight-storey building at Cardington indicate that the stability of composite steel-framed buildings, when the beams are unprotected, can be maintained by continuity and beam/slab interaction, even when the temperature of unprotected beams exceeds 1000ºC. Information is also included on work carried out in other countries, and observations of the behaviour of multi-storey buildings in actual fires. The background information will assist the reader to understand the basis of the
design recommendations.
