BS 8888:2008 Technical product specification. Specification
BS 8888:2008 brings together, in one easy-to-follow document, all international standards needed to prepare technical product specifications (TPS), in accordance with geometrical product specification principles.
BS 8888 helps you to better use the ISO system of product specification.
It gives you a unifying identity for the collection of ISO standards and an index to the standards which comprise the ISO system, referencing them according to their area of application. BS 8888 also makes reference to additional British and European Standards where they provide information or guidance over and above that provided by ISO standards
Commentary and recommendations on the application of the standards which UK businesses may find useful is also included.
BS 8888 covers more than just engineering drawing - it covers all aspects of technical product specification, including, for instance, the use of 3D CAD models to define component geometry.
BS 8888 ensures users:
Have access to one reference source with all information
Speak the same language when specifying and graphically representing products
Are precise in their application by leaving no room for misinterpretation
Help the smooth transfer of design concept to manufacturing process
Shorten product development time
Increase speed to market.
BS 8888 contains:
Terms and definitions
Global standards underpinning BS 8888
Types of documentation
Scales
Lines, arrows and terminators; lettering
Projections and views; sections
Symbols and abbreviations
Representation of features and components
Dimensioning and tolerancing; geometrical tolerancing
Surface texture indication
Graphical representation and annotation of 3-D data (3-D modelling output)
Verification, security and storage and retrieval
Marking
Protection notices
Annexes cover topics including cast, forged and moulded parts, document security, the key differences between BS 8888 geometrical tolerancing and ASME Y14.5 geometric dimensioning and tolerancing, and forthcoming amendments to BS ISO 1101:2004.
It is not the intention that BS 8888 should be a “stand-alone” standard since it is part of a triumvirate of Technical Product Realization standards also comprising BS 8887 and BS 8889.
BS 8888:2008 supersedes BS 8888:2006, which is withdrawn. This new edition updates the fourth edition, bringing in relevant standards published during 2007 and early 2008. It does not represent a full revision of the standard, which will be undertaken in due course.
