It also explores the calculation of the various structures inserted in the canal, notably the gates.

Current mathematical models are presented for studying the influence on the movements of a canal exerted by the variations in the opening of the gates or modifications in the rates of flow. The rehabilitation and modernization of old canals which are still in service are considered, and methods of avoiding deterioration by effective maintenance and conservation are addressed.

Although the section on canals is a very important topic within the subject of Hydraulic Engineering, the technical literature that has been written is aimed more directly at other work, such as dams, hydroelectric plants, piping, drinking water supply to towns, etc.
There are many excellent books on canals from the theoretical hydraulic performance point of view, but publications from the engineering design, construction and handling points of view are few and far between.

Many engineers, when starting out on their professional careers within this specialty, needed – and could not find – a text that resolved their doubts about details, that gave hints as to how to obtain complementary documentation and, above all, that gave an overall view of the subject.

By dint of asking first some and then other people, by searching ceaselessly for the most diverse bibliography and having made countless mistakes, it seemed to us that the writing of this book could be very useful.
