• Abstract: Historical masonry buildings with irregular geometric layouts, which cover a large floor area, display poor seismic behaviour. Stresses occur because of irregularities in plan or elevation, and consequent unbalanced mass distributions. The gravity and
  earthquake analyses are applied in this study on the analytical model of the historical Gazanfer Aga Madrasah. The analyses are used to examine the performance of the building under earthquake effects. The importance of analytical modelling technique
  in the analysis of irregular masses is emphasized.

• Abstract: This paper studies the effects of orientation of CFRP (carbon fibre reinforced polymer) strip layers on the improvement of bearing capacity of strengthened steel-made circular hollow elements. The four point bending test was conducted, and elements
  were subjected to bending until failure. The improvement of bearing capacity of strengthened tubular steel elements is presented in terms of failure load, stiffness, composite beam action, and modes of failure. Beams strengthened with CFRP strips with two longitudinal layers and one layer along the periphery performed better than the beams reinforced with one longitudinal layer and two layers along the periphery.

• Abstract: This paper describes a procedure for the development and use of tables for the preliminary design of reinforced concrete elements exposed to bending action, in compliance with appropriate ultimate and serviceability limit state criteria. The use of tables for defining basic dimensions of cross-sectional elements enables designers to avoid the "trial and error"
  approach, while also ensuring fast and simple preliminary dimensioning as a preparation for the subsequent more detailed design of structural elements.

• Abstract: The application of weight losses to investigate corrosion effects on structural behaviour of
  an offshore structure under wave loads is presented in this study. Weight losses of sections obtained during previous experimental studies are implemented in the model. The jacket type structural model is analysed in its intact and deteriorated forms to demonstrate
  corrosion effects. The ABAQUS finite elements program is utilized and the fluid structure interaction (FSI) technique is adopted when modelling the interaction between solid and fluid domains. Mode shapes, first three natural frequencies, displacements of selected points, and maximum stresses, are comparatively presented.

• Abstract: In recent years, the Rapid Impact Compaction has gained popularity as a ground improvement technique. To evaluate the usefulness of this technique in the Arabian Gulf Region, the RIC is used to improve an area of 29,000 m2 on a project site near Dubai, UAE, where the groundwater level is shallow. Cone Penetration Tests and settlement calculations were carried out before and after soil improvement. Test
  results show improvement in the soil bearing capacity and reduction in expected settlements.

Application of cold formed hollow steel sections

• Abstract: According to EN 1993-1-1, the application of hollow steel sections is permitted in the execution of steel structures, regardless of whether they are hot finished according to EN 10210 or cold finished according to EN 10219. Steel designers often have doubts about the use of cold formed hollow sections due to unfavourable effects of cold forming. Such doubts may be due to inconsistencies in EN 1993-1-8 relating to the permissibility of welding in cold formed zones. The main objective of this paper is to
  present guidelines for the selection of appropriate rectangular hollow sections in the design of steel structures, with justification of the use of cold formed hollow sections.

• Abstract: Quaternary blending cement concrete with fibres is studied in terms of compressive, split tensile, and flexural strength properties, and impact resistance. Fly ash, rice husk ash, and limestone powder, are used as partial replacement of cement. Steel, carbon,
  and polypropylene fibres, are used in different fractions. The results show that the
  steel-carbon and steel-carbon-polypropylene hybrid fibre reinforced concretes perform
  better with regard to compressive, split tensile, and flexural strength properties, and
  impact resistance.
