Slope stability analyses using limit equilibrium and strength reduction methods

• Abstract: This paper presents results of comparative slope stability analyses conducted by limit equilibrium and strength reduction methods. Several slopes, taken either from geotechnical practice or literature review, are considered. The influence of tension, distributed load, finite element size and model parameters is analysed in relation to the location, shape of the critical failure surface and the corresponding value of the factor of safety. Both methods provide similar results if they are correctly applied using appropriate software programs.

• Abstract: The relationship between the ground motion intensity measure (IM) and the engineering demand parameter (EDP) is analysed in the paper so as to identify
  and define the most efficient EDP-IM relationships for RC high-rise buildings. A 30-story RC high-rise building with the core wall structural system was selected as
  the reference building. 240 nonlinear time-history analyses were conducted for 60 ground motions on the spatial model of the building. The existing intensity measures were analyzed and the new ones – providing the most efficient relationships for RC
  buildings - were proposed.

Punching strength of flat slabs with and without shear reinforcement

• Abstract: The punching shear strength is an extremely significant parameter for the design of flat slabs, i.e. the slabs supported directly on columns, without beams between columns. Slab punching design models are presented according to Eurocode 2, ACI Code 318, and fib Model Code 2010. The authors’ own experimental research on the punching shear of
  slabs with and without shear reinforcement is described, and the results are compared with predictions given in the mentioned design models. It was established that all design models underestimate the experimentally obtained shear strength in the case of slabs without shear reinforcement. As to slabs with shear reinforcement, it was observed that
  the shear strength determined according to Eurocode 2 is overestimated.

• Abstract: A full-scale accelerated structural load test was performed in the scope of field trials conducted to investigate the effect of various strengthening actions on weak pavements. The asphalt layer thickness varied from 6.5 cm to 13.6 cm. The results of deformations applied on test structures are presented in the paper. The loading of each test structure lasted for approximately 2 weeks. Clear dependence between the depth of permanent deformation and thickness of asphalt layers was established on thin
  pavement structures only.

• Abstract: This paper presents results obtained by numerical study of sloshing effects in medium sized rectangular tanks subjected to a long-period seismic excitation. The Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method is used, and the wave displacement and pressure are analysed. The intensity of sloshing effects depends not only on the peak ground acceleration but also on the dominant frequency of ground motion.
  Excessive sloshing displacements and pressures increase when the natural period of the contained liquid approaches the dominant period of ground excitation.

• Abstract: The nonlinear seismic analysis of steel frame without diagonals is presented in the paper. The real behaviour of semi-rigid joints is taken into account through prior numerical simulation of the selected type of joint. The resulting bending moment
  and rotation curve is substituted with trilinear approximation and incorporated in seismic analysis according to the nonlinear static N2 method. Absolute and relative frame displacements are determined, and the corresponding results are compared with results for the steel frame with absolutely rigid joints.

• Abstract: Steel lattice masts rank among the most efficient load-bearing structures in the field of high-rise construction. The non-linear analysis of a guyed steel lattice mast is conducted using the SAP 2000 finite-element program for different ice thickness
  values at 1500 m of altitude. After definition of the geometrical model and crosssection properties, various load combinations are analysed. Finally, the wind speed - ice thickness relationship is obtained, and the maximum wind speed that the structure can withstand is determined for varying ice thicknesses.

• Abstract: Masonry arches assume a very important role in construction industry, and we find them in many historical structures all over the world. Dynamic parameters, frequency, and damping of masonry arches are defined in this paper using the Experimental Modal Analysis (EMA). Double-layered arches were built using standard hollow bricks and
  traditional Horasan mortar. The brick arches were tested with an impact hammer, and the arch response was measured using a laser vibrometer. Experimental tests were compared with numerical modelling in order to verify adequacy of physical models.
