Introduction
This study performed the finite element analysis of the stone column reinforced foundation and the matching scheme for conversion of axisymmetric stone column unit cell into equivalent plane strain. Based on simplified analytical method presented by Han & Ye (2001), FEM analysis was carried out and to verify the simplified solutions. Good agreements were found in the comparisons.
In order to carry out finite element analysis for stone column treated foundation in two-dimensional condition, the plane strain model must be idealized. The conversion of axisymmetric stone column unit cell model into equivalent plane strain model is presented in this study. The parameter matching scheme consisting the stiffness and permeability matching procedures is reported. The stiffness matching is based on composite stiffness and area replacement ratio while permeability matching is based on equality of rate of consolidation.
The finite element analyses showed that the proposed matching scheme for conversion of axisymmetric stone column model into plane strain model gives good agreement with field performance of stone column works. In addition, the FEM analysis also verified that faster dissipation of excess pore water pressure in soil was achieved by using stone column work, thus accelerating the consolidation process.
