This 4th edition contains a complete revision of format and content from the 3rd Edition. The expansion
of content through the 2nd and 3rd Editions has been re-organized with the goal of locating all
requirements for materials in one section for each element of supply. The context of the document has
also changed, reflecting a more mature cable-stay market in the US, with less need for introductory or
background information on materials and processes.
The 4th Edition is published in Sl units, and has been re-organized into a Load and Resistance Factor
Design (LRFD) format, designed to be used with the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Code. The
transformation to LRFD was benchmarked against Working Stress Design (WSD) criteria of the 3rd Edition
for the basic dead load + live load case. The format of fatigue provisions also follows that of LRFD, but
is otherwise referenced to the extensive testing database from WSD criteria. As a result of the change
to LRFD, the fatigue design case is the primary limit state condition that relates directly to prior designs.
Therefore, Engineers should be deliberate in reviewing the serviceability limit states lor unusual designs
that have historically been controlled by the service conditions,: in WSD .
