CIRIA summary: This document provides guidance on best practice for safe working in the investigation of landfills and contaminated land. The document first outlines the considerations that need to be addressed before commencing a site investigation (Chapter 2), the contractual requirements (Chapter 3), the bill of quantities (Chapter 4) and insurance (Chapter 5). As part of health and safety, Chapter 4 discusses hazard assessment including categorisation of the site (green, yellow or red site), and the implications for landfill gases and other contaminants.
