Case History Evaluation of the Behaviour of Drilled Shafts Under Axial and Lateral Loading

This report presents the results of a study to evaluate drilled shaft behavior under axial and lateral loading for undrained and drained conditions. This is a critical evaluation that incorporates a wide variety of available field and laboratory load test data, standardized to a consistent reference plane. It gives specific design recommendations for drilled shafts and the appropriate statistics to describe the quality of the recommendations.
As a result of gravity dead loads, vertical live loads such as ice and snow accumulations and lateral wind loads, the design of foundations for transmission line structures is dominated by axial and lateral loading. A variety of analytical models and load test databases have led to differences and perception of drilled shaft behavior under these loading modes and a consistent design methodology does not exist for those foundations. As a result, engineers often recommend drilled shafts having significantly different dimensions for identical geotechnical and loading conditions.
