  • Abstract: Sand jacks are used to support the weight of bridge works during construction because they are cheap, reliable, and easy to remove once their purpose has been served. When the writers had a need for several 1000kN capacity jacks, they found no published data on their design and construction. In particular, there was no information on their stiffness, which was important to the particular application. This Technical Note sets down the design method adopted, and the results of testing of the prototype jack. Some comments on the operation of the jacks are included.
