fib Bulletin No. 59

Title:Condition control and assessment of reinforced concrete structures exposed to corrosive environments (carbonation/chlorides).

Category: State-of-art report

Abstract:

For the ongoing condition assessment of concrete structures, it is necessary to identify the extent, nature, cause and prognosis of any deterioration using a range of tools and methods, including prediction models. Combined with the original design and construction details, this gives a vast amount of information over a long time period. A framework concept is therefore needed to process the entirety of the information in order to make sound investment decisions on future maintenance management.

To provide such a framework, fib Bulletin 59 summarizes information published in fib Bulletins 17, 22, 34 and 44 relevant to the control and assessment of reinforced concrete structures, and develops a practical concept of how, when and where to control the condition of an existing concrete structure in order to facilitate structural management. Thus it gives a basis for processing relevant information in order to make decisions on the appropriate course of action for condition control.

fib Bulletins is a generic term for a series of publications that include several types of technical documents: model codes, application manuals, design guides or recommendations, synthesis or state-of-the-art reports, and technical reports, which form a detailed record of the results attained by commissions and task groups in the field of research synthesis and operational application to concrete structures. Depending on a bulletin's status, its contents will be harmonized through approval by a task group (technical reports) or commission (state-of-the-art reports), or, if necessary, presented, discussed and assessed by the technical council (manuals, guides and recommendations) or the general assembly (model codes).

They are published irregularly, about five to six times per year.

fib Bulletin No. 43: Structural connections for precast concrete buildings

| Size: 9.63 MB| Format: PDF| Quality: Original preprint| Year: 2008| pages: 370 | ISBN: 978-2-88394-083-3

Connections are among the most essential parts in precast structures. Their performance relates to the structural limit states, as well as to manufacture of the precast elements and erection and maintenance of the structure itself. Proper design of connections is one major key to a successful prefabrication.

The principal aim of fib Bulletin 43 is to encourage good practice in the design of structural connections in precast concrete structures. This is achieved through a good understanding of structural connections as parts of the overall structural system and of basic force transferring mechanisms.

The bulletin consists of two parts; the first part concerns general considerations and philosophy in the design of structural connections, and the second part deals with basic force transferring mechanisms within structural connections. The main focus is on the design of structural connections with regard to their structural function in ordinary design situations in the serviceability and ultimate limit states, and in accidental/abnormal design situations, like fire, lack of fit and impact/accidental loads. Other aspects considered include production, handling and site erection of elements, building physics, durability and maintenance.

Bulletin 43 applies to structural connections for precast concrete buildings, although the information on basic force transfer mechanisms can also be applicable to other types of prefabricated structures.

fib Bulletin No. 68: Probabilistic performance-based seismic designs

| Size: 5.34 MB| Format: PDF| Quality: Original preprint| Year: 2012| pages: 118 | ISBN: 978-2-88394-108-3

In the last ten to fifteen years a vast amount of research has been undertaken to improve on earlier methods for analysing the seismic reliability of structures. These efforts focused on identifying aspects of prominent relevance and disregarding the inessential ones, with the goal of producing methods that are both more efficient and easier to use in practice. Today this goal can be said to be substantially achieved.

During these years scientific activity covered all of the many aspects involved in such a multi-disciplinary problem, ranging from seismology, to geotechnics, to structural analysis and economy, all of them to be consistently organised into a probabilistic framework. As the output of this research was dispersed into a multitude of technical papers, fib Commission 7 thought it worthwhile to select the essential aspects of this large body of knowledge and to present them into a coherent and accessible document for structural engineers. To this end a task group of specialists was formed, whose qualifications come from their personal involvement in the above-mentioned developments throughout this period of time.

From its inception the group decided that the bulletin should have had a distinct educational character and provide a clear overview of the methods available. The outcome is a compact volume that starts by introducing the concepts and definitions of performance-based engineering, continues with two chapters on assessment and design, respectively, presenting the methods in detail accompanied by illustrative examples, and concludes with an appendix with sample programming excerpts for their implementation. It is believed that at present fib Bulletin 68 represents a unique compendium on probabilistic performance-based seismic design.
