PsD Test on Four-Story R/C Building Designed According to Eurocodes

Abstract:
An experimental program was conducted on a four-story full-scale reinforced concrete building designed as a ductility class “high” structure in accordance with Eurocodes 2 and 8. The activity was defined as part of a cooperative research program by the European Association of Structural Mechanics Laboratories. The pseudodynamic tests were conducted for a serviceability-level and high-level earthquake—1.5 times the reference accelerogram. The results of the pseudodynamic tests are presented. General conclusions about the performance of the structure are drawn, with attention paid to the effects of the adoption of the new high-strength B500 Tempcore steel. The results make it possible to discuss the influence of the modeling parameters to be used in predicting the behavior of this class of structures. Effects such as the pullout and the slippage of the bars in the joints, or the participation of the slab to the global stiffness were found to play a fundamental role.

Analysis of Flexible Transmission Lines

Abstract:
An iterative numerical procedure has been developed to analyze flexible transmission lines of arbitrary configuration. Conductors, ground, or guy wires are included as cable elements interconnected at linear or nonlinear supports. A single efficient subroutine determines the cable elements end forces, geometrics, and tangent stiffness matrices. Convergence of the procedure is very rapid as documented by two computer programs. Examples including broken conductors, unbalanced ice loads, longitudinal, or diagonal wind are presented. The procedure is absolutely general and can be extended to two-dimensional analyses of cable nets.

Probabilistic Design of Transmission Line Structure

Abstract:
For many years, electric transmission line structures in the U.S. have been designed in accordance with the minimum load and strength requirements given in the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC). Transmission line designers have recognized certain deficiencies in the NESC and usually specify increased design loading requirements based on conditions in local service areas. This practice has led to a lack of uniformity in design criteria for transmission line structures in the U.S. and points to the need for a uniform design approach based on probabilistic concepts. A load and resistance factor design format is recommended in which the design factors are probability‐based. The design point method for reliability analysis is reviewed and a computer program which applies this method to transmission line structures is described. A calibration example is presented which illustrates the use of this program for establishing the level of reliability in an existing structure and the corresponding design factors. It is concluded that the methodology is quite suitable for application to transmission line structures and that sufficient data are available for determining the required design factors
