Elasto-plastic large deformation analysis of thin-walled structures

Abstract
This paper presents an elasto-plastic, large deformation analysis of thin-walled structures. A solution procedure for treating both the geometric and material nonlinearities, based on an updated Lagrangian formulation, is proposed. The procedure is suitable for analysing large-scale space frames since the structures may be modelled using only a single beam-column element per member. It is achieved by incorporating a displacement stiffness matrix which provides the necessary coupling between the axial stretching and the flexural and torsional deformations. The geometric and the displacement stiffness matrices for a general, thin-walled, beam-column element previously derived in References 1 and 2 are used. Plastic hinge formation, the interaction of element forces at the hinges and elastic unloading are taken into account in the analysis. In particular, a single-equation, stress-resultant yield surface has been developed to model the plastification of structural steel angle sections under a combination of axial force and moments about the principal axes. Yield surfaces for tubular sections and American wide flange sections are also considered. Several numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the method.

A tutorial survey directed to the practicing engineer who is interested in computerized techniques for static and dynamic structural analysis.

The discussion is directed to the general questions which occur in the application of computer aided analysis. Consideration is given to structural modeling, input preparation procedures, solutions algorithms, numerical errors, and output interpretation. The emphasis is on large general purpose programs and on establishing a definition of the current state of the art.

Dynamics of a freestanding steel lighting tower

Abstract
Results of full scale measurements of the dynamic characteristics of a steel lighting tower at the Sydney Cricket Ground in New South Wales, Australia, are presented. The first three natural frequencies of vibration were found to be 0.50 Hz, 2.40 Hz and 4.84 Hz respectively; the corresponding mode shapes have also been determined. These results are compared with those obtained from a plane rigid frame dynamic analysis computer program and found to be in good agreement. Damping levels (in % of critical) were found to be approximately 0.3%, 0.8% and 1.0% for the first three modes.

Abstract
The complexity of wind loading arises from their variations in space and time. The paper discusses three key spatial functions which control the magnitude of responses: the influence lines, the mode shapes and pressure distributions. The last can be efficiently described in terms of orthonormal expansions. The paper describes how the different time dependent loadings — the mean, the background and resonant responses - are related to the spatial functions. These tools provide a promising route for generalization and simplification of wind loading.
