This book deals with the design and optimization of the bucket elevator using the discrete element method (DEM). It describes the underlying scientific basis for the design of transport equipment using computer simulations and is focused on issues relevant to the industrial sector, mechanical engineering; and the transport, treatment, measurement, and storage of bulk materials. It presents solutions for mitigating bulk material supply chain interruptions due to process malfunctions and failures, utilizing research on monitoring and evaluating of the dynamic processes of particulate matter.
The aim of the book is to help readers new to the field with the design of innovative devices. Imparting practical information aimed at saving time and money in project design, the book is ideal for engineers, designers, and researchers concerned with all aspects of bulk materials.Introduces and explains fully the Discrete Element Method using measured values as inputs for the method;Shows whether calculated simulations and real measured values models can be used for design;Illustrates how to validate, calibrate, and optimize the dynamic processes of bulk elevators;Explains how to test transport and storage equipment before it is produced using dynamic simulation of material flow on transport lines, saving time and money.

This book stems from a course on Micromechanics that I started about fifteen years ago at Northwestern University. At that time, micromechanics was a rather unfamiliar subject. Although I repeated the course every year, I was never convinced that my notes have quite developed into a final manuscript because new topics emerged constantly requiring revisions, and additions. I finally came to realize that if this is continued, then I will never complete the book to my total satisfaction. Meanwhile, T. Mori and I had coauthored a book in Japanese, entitled Micromechanics, published by Baifu-kan, Tokyo, in 1975. It received an extremely favorable response from students and re searchers in Japan. This encouraged me to go ahead and publish my course notes in their latest version, as this book, which contains further development of the subject and is more comprehensive than the one published in Japanese. Micromechanics encompasses mechanics related to microstructures of materials. The method employed is a continuum theory of elasticity yet its applications cover a broad area relating to the mechanical behavior of materi als: plasticity, fracture and fatigue, constitutive equations, composite materi als, polycrystals, etc. These subjects are treated in this book by means of a powerful and unified method which is called the 'eigenstrain method. ' In particular, problems relating to inclusions and dislocations are most effectively analyzed by this method, and therefore, special emphasis is placed on these topics.

Introduction to Contact Mechanics, Second Edition is a gentle introduction to the mechanics of solid bodies in contact for graduate students, post doctoral individuals, and the beginning researcher.

This second edition maintains the introductory character of the first with a focus on materials science as distinct from straight solid mechanics theory. Every chapter has been updated to make the book easier to read and more informative. A new chapter on depth sensing indentation has been added, and the contents of the other chapters have been completely overhauled with added figures, formulae and explanations.

The author begins with an introduction to the mechanical properties of materials, general fracture mechanics and the fracture of brittle solids. This is followed by a detailed description of indentation stress fields for both elastic and elastic-plastic contact. The discussion then turns to the formation of Hertzian cone cracks in brittle materials, subsurface damage in ductile materials, and the meaning of hardness. The author concludes with an overview of practical methods of indentation.

This handbook is a collection of elasticity solutions. Many of the results presented here cannot be found in textbooks and are available in scientific articles only. Some of them were obtained in the closed form quite recently. The solutions have been thoroughly checked and reduced to a "user friendly" form. Every effort has been made to keep the book free of misprints. The theory of elasticity is a mature field and a large number of solutions are available. We had to make choices in selecting material for this book. The emphasis is made on results relevant to general solid mechanics and materials science applications. Solutions related to structural mechanics (beams, plates, shells, etc.) are left out. The content is limited to the linear elasticity.

Meshfree approximation methods are a relatively new area of research, and there are only a few books covering it at present. Whereas other works focus almost entirely on theoretical aspects or applications in the engineering field, this book provides the salient theoretical results needed for a basic understanding of meshfree approximation methods.

The emphasis here is on a hands-on approach that includes MATLAB routines for all basic operations. Meshfree approximation methods, such as radial basis function and moving least squares method, are discussed from a scattered data approximation and partial differential equations point of view. A good balance is supplied between the necessary theory and implementation in terms of many MATLAB programs, with examples and applications to illustrate key points. Used as class notes for graduate courses at Northwestern University, Illinois Institute of Technology, and Vanderbilt University, this book will appeal to both mathematics and engineering graduate students.

Poromechanics is the mechanics of porous materials and is now a well established field in many engineering disciplines, ranging from Civil Engineering, Geophysics, Petroleum Engineering to Bioengineering. However, a rigorous approach that links the physics of the phenomena at stake in porous materials and the macroscopic behaviour is still missing. This book presents such an approach by means of homogenization techniques. Rigorously founded in various theories of micromechanics, these up scaling techniques are developed for the homogenization of transport properties, stiffness and strength properties of porous materials.

The special feature of this book is the balance between theory and application, providing the reader with a comprehensive introduction to state-of-the-art homogenization theories and applications to a large range of real life porous materials: concrete, rocks, shales, bones, etc.
Applied Elasticity and Plasticity is a comprehensive work that introduces graduate students and professionals in civil, mechanical, aeronautical and metallurgical engineering to the basic theories of elasticity, plasticity and their practical applications. Based on experimental data of static tension tests of material, several elastic and plastic stress-strain relations are derived, and commonly-used yield criteria and strain hardening rules are discussed as well.

Analysis of conventional, deviatoric and mathematical stress and strain in two and three dimensions is presented. Analytical applications include torsion and bending of structural components subjected to various loadings, thick-walled cylindrical and spherical vessels subjected to internal and external pressures, stress-concentrations around holes, stress-intensity factors in structural components containing circular, elliptical and many more concepts important for professionals and students alike.
This resource provides the necessary background in mechanics that is essential in many fields, such as civil, mechanical, construction, architectural, industrial, and manufacturing technologies. The focus is on the fundamentals of material statics and strength and the information is presented using an elementary, analytical, practical approach, without the use of Calculus. To ensure understanding of the concepts, rigorous, comprehensive example problems follow the explanations of theory, and numerous homework problems at the end of each chapter allow for class examples, homework problems, or additional practice for students. Updated and completely reformatted, the Sixth Edition of Applied Statics and Strength of Materials features color in the illustrations, chapter-opening Learning Objectives highlighting major topics, updated terminology changed to be more consistent with design codes, and the addition of units to all calculations.
This textbook's methodological approach familiarizes readers with the mathematical tools required to correctly define and solve problems in continuum mechanics. Covering essential principles and fundamental applications, this second edition of Continuum Mechanics using Mathematica® provides a solid basis for a deeper study of more challenging and specialized problems related to nonlinear elasticity, polar continua, mixtures, piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity, magneto-fluid mechanics and state changes (see A. Romano, A. Marasco, Continuum Mechanics: Advanced Topics and Research Trends, Springer (Birkhäuser), 2010, ISBN 978-0-8176-4869-5). Key topics and features: * Concise presentation strikes a balance between fundamentals and applications * Requisite mathematical background carefully collected in two introductory chapters and one appendix * Recent developments highlighted through coverage of more significant applications to areas such as wave propagation, fluid mechanics, porous media, linear elasticity. This second edition expands the key topics and features to include: * Two new applications of fluid dynamics: meteorology and navigation * New exercises at the end of the existing chapters * The packages are rewritten for Mathematica 9 Continuum Mechanics using Mathematica®: Fundamentals, Applications and Scientific Computing is aimed at advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers in applied mathematics, mathematical physics and engineering. It may serve as a course textbook or self-study reference for anyone seeking a solid foundation in continuum mechanics.
Mechanics of Materials: With Applications in Excel® covers the fundamentals of the mechanics of materials―or strength of materials―in a clear and easily understandable way. Each chapter explains the theory of the underlying principles and the applicable mathematical relations, offering examples that illustrate the application of the mathematical relations to physical situations. Then, homework problems―arranged from the simplest to the most demanding―are presented, along with a number of challenging review problems, to ensure comprehension of key concepts.

What makes this book unique is that it also instills practical skills for developing Microsoft Excel applications to solve mechanics of materials problems using numerical techniques. Mechanics of Materials: With Applications in Excel® provides editable Excel spreadsheets representing all the examples featured in the text, PowerPoint lecture slides, multimedia simulations, graphics files, and a solutions manual with qualifying course adoption.
There is a great deal of interest in extending nondestructive technologies beyond the location and identification of cracks and voids. Specifically there is growing interest in the application of nondestructive evaluation (NOEl to the measurement of physical and mechanical properties of materials. The measurement of materials properties is often referred to as materials characterization; thus nondestructive techniques applied to characterization become nondestructive characterization (NDCl. There are a number of meetings, proceedings and journals focused upon nondestructive technologies and the detection and identification of cracks and voids. However, the series of symposia, of which these proceedings represent the fourth, are the only meetings uniquely focused upon nondestructive characterization. Moreover, these symposia are especially concerned with stimulating communication between the materials, mechanical and manufacturing engineer and the NDE technology oriented engineer and scientist. These symposia recognize that it is the welding of these areas of expertise that is necessary for practical development and application of NDC technology to measurements of components for in service life time and sensor technology for intelligent processing of materials. These proceedings are from the fourth international symposia and are edited by c.o. Ruud, J. F. Bussiere and R.E. Green, Jr. . The dates, places, etc of the symposia held to date area as follows: Symposia on Nondestructive Methods for TITLE: Material Property Determination DATES: April 6-8, 1983 PLACE: Hershey, PA, USA CHAIRPERSONS: C.O. Ruud and R.E. Green, Jr.
