There is considerable uncertainty about what level of traffic loading bridges should be designed for. Codes specify notional load models, generally to represent extreme levels of normal traffic, but these are often crude and have inconsistent levels of safety for different load effects. Over the past few decades, increasing quantities of reliable truck weight data has become available and it is now possible to calculate appropriate levels of bridge traffic loading, both for specific bridges and for a road network.

Bridge Traffic Loading brings together experts from all over the world to deliver not just the state-of-the-art of vertical loading, but also to provide recommendations of best-practice for all the major challenges in the field – short-span, single and multi-lane bridge loading, dynamic allowance and long-span bridges. It reviews issues that continue to be debated, such as which statistical distribution is most appropriate, whether free-flowing or congested traffic governs and dealing with future traffic growth. Specialist consultants and bridge owners should find this invaluable, as will regulators.
The Book "Construction, Maintenance, Restoration and Rehabllltatlon of Highway Bridges" has
been written for the benefit of bridge engineers associated with the construction. maintenance. restoration
and rehabilitation of bridges. The engineering students having a special subject on bridge engineering or
construction technology will also find the book very useful.
The book contains six chapters on bridge construction including durability considerations. two chapters on
bridge inspection and maintenance and seven chapters on failure and restoration of bridges as well as
rehabilitation of distressed bridges. The appendices contain proforma for original bridge report. proforma for
routine inspection and proforma for principal/detailed inspection.
To make the subject easily understandable, sketches have been profusely presented. Moreover. photographs
of actual construction, failure. restoration and rehabilitation of various Indian bridges have been included
in the book. Case studies have been reported for 25 actual bridges which are put to service after either
restoration or rehabilitation or reconstruction when they became unserviceable fully or partly due to failure
of or distress in bridge components. The problems encountered and the solutions adopted for these bridges
will immensely help the departmental engineers. consultants and contractors who might be faced with
similar problems.

Bridge design and construction technologies have experienced remarkable developments in recent decades, and numerous long-span bridges have been built or are under construction all over the world. Cable-supported bridges, including cable-stayed bridges and suspension bridges, are the main type of these long-span bridges, and are widely used in highways crossing gorges, rivers, and gulfs, due to their superior structural mechanical properties and beautiful appearance. However, cable-supported bridges suffer from harsh environmental effects and complex loading conditions, such as heavier traffic loads, strong winds, corrosion effects, and other natural disasters. Therefore, the lifetime safety evaluation of these long-span bridges considering the rigorous service environments is an essential task.

Features:

Presents a comprehensive explanation of system reliability evaluation for all aspects of cable-supported bridges.
Includes a comprehensive presentation of the application of system reliability theory in bridge design, safety control, and operational management.
Addresses fatigue reliability, dynamic reliability and seismic reliability assessment of bridges.
Presents a complete investigation and case study in each chapter, allowing readers to understand the applicability for real-world scenarios.
Reliability and Safety of Cable-Supported Bridges provides a comprehensive application and guidelines for system reliability techniques in cable-supported bridges. Serving as a practical educational resource for both undergraduate and graduate level students, practicing engineers, and researchers, it also intends to provide an intuitive appreciation for probability theory, statistical methods, and reliability analysis methods.

Segmental concrete bridges have become one of the main options for major transportation projects world-wide. They offer expedited construction with minimal traffic disruption, lower life cycle costs, appealing aesthetics and adaptability to a curved roadway alignment. The literature is focused on construction, so this fills the need for a design-oriented book for less experienced bridge engineers and for senior university students.

It presents comprehensive theory, design and key construction methods, with a simple design example based on the AASHTO LRFD Design Specifications for each of the main bridge types. It outlines design techniques and relationships between analytical methods, specifications, theory, design, construction and practice. It combines mathematics and engineering mechanics with the authors’ design and teaching experience.
Load Testing of Bridges, featuring contributions from almost fifty authors from around the world across two interrelated volumes, deals with the practical aspects, the scientific developments, and the international views on the topic of load testing of bridges.

Volume 13, Load Testing of Bridges: Proof Load Testing and the Future of Load Testing, focuses first on proof load testing of bridges. It discusses the specific aspects of proof load testing during the preparation, execution, and post-processing of such a test (Part 1). The second part covers the testing of buildings. The third part discusses novel ideas regarding measurement techniques used for load testing. Methods using non-contact sensors, such as photography- and video-based measurement techniques are discussed. The fourth part discusses load testing in the framework of reliability-based decision-making and in the framework of a bridge management program. The final part of the book summarizes the knowledge presented across the two volumes, as well as the remaining open questions for research, and provides practical recommendations for engineers carrying out load tests.

This work will be of interest to researchers and academics in the field of civil/structural engineering, practicing engineers and road authorities worldwide

As of April 2010, Eurocodes replaced British Standards as the principal design standards for bridges in the UK. In support of the transition, the Bridge Design to Eurocodes: UK Implementation conference, held at the Institution of Civil Engineers on 22-23 November 2010, brought important background and explanatory information into the public domain. The proceedings of this conference provide an enduring record of the UK's Eurocodes implementation for bridge design, with papers written by invited engineers and experts who have been at the very heart of Eurocode developments in the UK. Readers are provided with the key technical decisions taken in the development of the National Annexes, as well as important sources of complementary information and practical advice on applying the codes with papers contributed by major client organisations explaining their implementation strategies. Providing definitive, essential and practical information on the implementation of the Eurocodes for bridge design in the UK, Bridge Design to Eurocodes: UK Implementation is essential reading for bridge owners, managers, designers, consultants, contractors, local or central government engineers, academics, and software developers, that is anyone interested or involved in the design, build, maintenance or ownership of bridges.

This book presents extensive information on structural health monitoring for suspension bridges. During the past two decades, there have been significant advances in the sensing technologies employed in long-span bridge health monitoring. However, interpretation of the massive monitoring data is still lagging behind. This book establishes a series of measurement interpretation frameworks that focus on bridge site environmental conditions, and global and local responses of suspension bridges. Using the proposed frameworks, it subsequently offers new insights into the structural behaviors of long-span suspension bridges. As a valuable resource for researchers, scientists and engineers in the field of bridge structural health monitoring, it provides essential information, methods, and practical algorithms that can facilitate in-service bridge performance assessments.
Cable-supported bridges are known for their visual elegance, aesthetic appeal and ability to link long spans. The extent of issues of concern associated with these structures is commensurate with their size and vast scale. Significant advances in the technology of assessment, design, construction and maintenance of cable-supported bridges have been achieved in the past few years, due to increasing awareness, collaboration and information exchange. This book contains selected papers on cable-supported bridges as presented at the 5th International Cable-Supported Bridge Operators' Conference, held in New York City on August 28-29, 2006. It includes papers by leading international bridge engineers. Presenting state-of-the-art material, the book is an authoritative account on the developments in the field, this volume forms essential reading to anyone working on cable-supported bridges. Due to significant economic growth in the last few decades, increasing traffic loads impose tremendous demand on bridge structures. This, coupled with ongoing deterioration of bridges, introduces a unique challenge to bridge engineers in maintaining service of these infrastructure assets without disruption to vital economic and social activities. This requires innovative solutions and optimized methodologies to achieve safe and efficient operation of bridge structures.

Bridge engineering practitioners, researchers, owners, and contractors from all over the world presented on modern techniques in design, inspection, monitoring and rehabilitation of bridge structures, at the Sixth New York City Bridge Conference held New York City on July 25-26, 2011. This book contains a select number of papers presented at the conference. This group of papers provides a state-of-the-art in bridge engineering and is of interest to any reader in the field.
Guidance on Protecting and Extending the Life of Suspension Bridges

Suspension bridges are graceful, aesthetic, and iconic structures. Due to their attractiveness and visibility, they are well-known symbols of major cities and countries in the world. They are also an essential form of transportation infrastructure built across large bodies of water. Despite being expensive to build, they are economical structures for the lengths they span. They have evolved significantly from the basic concept dating back to 200 BC China through the first design for a bridge resembling a modern suspension bridge, attributed to Fausto Veranzio in 1595, to present-day span lengths close to two kilometers.

Many of these bridges carry significant traffic and their upkeep is very important to maintain transportation mobility. They offer grace and functionality, yet are extremely complex to construct and maintain. Bridge owners spend a considerable amount of time and resources to ensure uninterrupted service, safety, and security for users. Inspection, evaluation, maintenance, and rehabilitation have evolved significantly.

Modern materials and innovative design and construction practices have been integrated into these bridges to maintain durability and extended service life.
