The National Building Code of Canada 2015 (NBC), published by NRC and developed by the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes, sets out technical provisions for the design and construction of new buildings. It also applies to the alteration, change of use and demolition of existing buildings. Over 360 technical changes have been incorporated in this new edition.

Thirty-four changes to the NBC and eight changes to the National Fire Code 2015 (NFC) now permit construction of six-storey buildings using combustible construction. As a result, additional protection measures have been added to address the risk of injury due to fire and structural collapse in the finished building as well as during construction. Special attention was also given to protect buildings during construction when fire protection features are not yet in place.

The many changes in the 2015 edition also include updates to accessibility and associated design requirements in Part 3, aligning Code requirements with the current knowledge on accessibility. Hazard values for seismic design in Part 4 and Appendix C have been updated and design exemptions withdrawn so that all buildings in Canada will now be designed for earthquake forces regardless of the level of hazard. Apparent Sound Transmission Class (ASTC) is introduced in Part 5 to assess compliance with minimum airborne sound requirements between dwelling units. There are also significant changes to Part 9, housing and small buildings, with over half impacting stairs, ramps, handrails and guards. A key change in the NBC 2015 increases the run dimension of a step inside the house, a change which aims to reduce fall incidences and aligns NBC requirements with international codes.

The NBC 2015 is divided into two Volumes and has been re-organized to consolidate relevant information. Each Part now contains the Prescriptive Requirements, followed by the related (appendix) Notes. Parts 1 to 8 are found in Volume 1 and Part 9 now forms Volume 2.

The NBC 2015 complements the National Fire Code of Canada 2015, and both are indispensable for officials, educators and construction professionals.

Based on the publication "Specification for Structural Steel Buildings" (American National Standard ANSI / AISC 360-10) published by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC).

This specification establishes criteria for the design, fabrication and installation of structural steel buildings and other structures where other structures are defined as those structures designed, manufactured and assembled in a similar way to the building, thus indicating that its resistant elements vertical and lateral loads are similar to those resistant building systems.
If this specification refers to the applicable building code, and the code does not exist, loads, load combinations, system limitations, and general design requirements are set out in ASCE / SEI 7.
When these conditions are not covered by this specification, allowing the design is made based on tests or analyzes, provided they are approved by the competent authority.
The use of alternative methods of analysis and design, to the extent that such methods are accepted by the competent authority are allowed.

Seismic Applications: The code Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI-AISC 341) should be applied in the design of earthquake resistant systems structural steel or structural steel acting in combination with concrete, unless specifically exempted by the applicable building code. The provisions of Annex 1 of this specification should not be applied to the seismic design of buildings or other structures.

Nuclear Applications: In addition to the provisions of this specification, the design, manufacture and assembly of nuclear structures must meet the requirements of Safety-related Specification for Steel Structures for Nuclear Facilities (AISC ANSI-N690).

The design is made in accordance with the provisions of the design method based on factors Load and Resistance (LRFD) or any method based Design Allowable Resistance (ASD).

NEC - SE - CG code (Minimum loads):
The NECSE-CG provides a general framework for structural designer. Loads to be considered in the calculation and design of all types of structures are:
• permanent loads (minimum dead loads in particular).
• variable loads (live loads, wind and hail).
They will be complemented by accidental loads are seismic loads (in new construction and rehabilitation), subject to the NEC-SE-DS and NEC-SE-RE standards. Shall not be taken into account:
• temporary loads due to the construction process,

NEC - SE - HM code (Structural concrete):
The structural elements of reinforced concrete must comply with the latest specifications of the ACI-318 code. The seismic design will be in accordance with the NEC-SE-DS standard, indicating except Chapter 21 of ACI-318 code (Earthquake Resistant Structures). The provisions of this chapter apply to the design of buildings where seismic loads resistant system consists of:
• special frames,
• reinforced concrete structural walls.
This NEC-SE-HM is for reinforced concrete. For other types of concrete, not specified in this standard, it should refer to the following chapters of the ACI 318:
• Chapter 16 (Precast concrete)

International system of units (SI) according to the ISO 1000 standard are used.

NEC - SE - AC code (Structural steel):
These provisions consider that steel structures will be designed, manufactured and assembled using hot rolled profiles or armed assembled by means of welded plates.
These provisions shall apply where the reduction coefficient of seismic response R, specified in the NEC-SE-DS of these standards is greater than 3. The structural steel systems designed to higher-R 3 is expected to dissipate energy from movements design ground through inelastic deformations of the structure. For those cases where the rate of reduction of seismic response, R, is equal to or less than 3, no need to meet the requirements in these provisions, except for special systems of columns projecting where it must meet the requirements included in these systems.
The provisions in this chapter are based on the provisions presented in the ANSI / AISC 341-05 documents, ANSI / AISC 341-10 (Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings), 358-05 (prequalified Connections for Special and Intermediate Steel Moment Frames for Seismic Applications) and FEMA 350 Recommended Seismic Design Criteria for New Steel Moment Frame Buildings). These documents reflect the most current relative to the seismic performance of structural steel buildings in the United States knowledge.
Specifications and codes referenced in these provisions shall be those listed in Section A2 of the ANSI / AISC 360-10.

This code establishes requirements for the design and implementation of structural concrete buildings that are planned or built in the country. Applies to all aspects of the design, construction, inspection, supervision, maintenance, evaluation, adjustment or repair, as well as the properties and quality assurance of materials. Temporary or interim work must comply with the provisions of this standard.

Where appropriate, this Statement or any part thereof, is applied to the design, construction, inspection, monitoring and maintenance of structures for silos, grain elevators, warehouses, structures explosives testing, and other civil works, without prejudice to other specific technical criteria for the purposes of each work. Excluded from this standard:
The concrete with less than 1400 kgf / m3 unit weights.
The concrete with higher compressive strength specified in 600 kgf / cm2.
Members exposed to temperatures above 100 ° C.
The structures or members pre or post-tensioned concrete.
Structural systems consisting of prefabricated members.

The concrete used in mixed steel-concrete constructions comply with the provisions of this standard. Mixed steel-concrete members not included in this Statement are subject to the Venezuelan Standard 1618. Included within the scope of this standard the following members of steel-concrete composite structures: Mixed steel-concrete columns when the area structural steel profile is less than 4% of the total area of the mixed column. See Article 10.7. Concrete slabs emptied on sheets of corrugated metal (metal soffit) designed and built without considering joint action steel - concrete. See Chapter 16.

In addition to the general requirements of the particular project in this Standard, the buildings must comply with the special provisions for earthquake resistant design according to the design level. Levels of Design, ND, required in different seismic zones are set out in standard Covenin 1756.

Every building and every one of its parts should have the strength, rigidity and stability necessary to perform satisfactorily and safely to limit states that may arise during its lifetime.
