Rockburst: Mechanisms, Monitoring, Warning and Mitigation invites the most relevant researchers and practitioners worldwide to discuss the rock mechanics phenomenon related to increased stress and energy levels in intact rock introduced by drilling, explosion, blasting and other activities. When critical energy levels are reached, rockbursts can occur causing human and material losses in mining and tunneling environments. This book is the most comprehensive information source in English to cover rockbursts.
Comprised of four main parts, the book covers in detail the theoretical concepts related to rockbursts, and introduces the current computational modeling techniques and laboratory tests available. The second part is devoted to case studies in mining (coal and metal) and tunneling environments worldwide. The third part covers the most recent advances in measurement and monitoring. Special focus is given to the interpretation of signals and reliability of systems. The following part addresses warning and risk mitigation through the proposition of a single risk assessment index and a comprehensive warning index to portray the stress status of the rock and a successful case study. The final part of the book discusses mitigation including best practices for distressing and efficiently supporting rock.
Designed to provide the most comprehensive coverage, the book will provide practicing mining and tunneling engineers the theoretical background needed to better cope with the phenomenon, practical advice from case studies and practical mitigation actions and techniques. Academics in rock mechanics will appreciate this complete reference to rockburst, which features how to analyze stress signals and use computational modeling more efficiently.
Offers understanding of the fundamental theoretical concepts of rockbursts
Explores how to analyze signals from current monitoring systems
Shows how to apply mitigating techniques in current work
Identifies characteristics that should be measured in order to detect rockburst risk
Pipe jacking is a construction process for the no-dig laying of pipes. Successful pipe jacking demands low skin friction between the ground and the jacked pipe. This is achieved with bentonite lubrication. The bentonite slurry fed into the annular gap fulfils several purposes. It stabilises the annular gap by supporting the surrounding ground and reduces friction contact between ground and jacked pipe. The Bentonite Handbook deals comprehensibly with the relevant aspects of annular gap lubrication: starting with the ground conditions, which are of decisive importance for lubrication, through the rheological properties of the bentonite slurry to the technical components of lubrication technology and lubrication strategy. The use of standardised measuring apparatus is described as well as mixing equipment and the automatic lubrication system. Overview tables with calculations and suggested values for bentonite consumption quantities depending on the prevailing ground conditions and the pipe jacking parameters complete the recommendations. Read more...
Abstract: The book deals with almost all aspects of annular gap lubrication in pipe jacking - from ground conditions, through the properties of bentonite to the technical aspects. There is also a collection of calculations and suggested values for bentonite consumption quantities.

This guide presents a hands-on discussion of grouting fundamentals and provides a foundation for the development of practical specifications and field procedures. With a pragmatic approach to the subject of grouting, Henn concentrates on types of drilling, mixing, and pumping equipment, as well as their application. The book focuses on how cementitious grouting is used in conjunction with the excavation and lining of tunnels, shafts, and underground caverns in rock. Overviews of cementitious grouting in soils and chemical grouting are also provided. Topics range from record keeping to quality control and testing requirements to field operations, and production rates.

This book is written as a useful handbook for engineers, construction supervisors, inspectors, and other professionals involved in the planning, design, and implementation of underground grouting programs.

Atlas of Natural and Induced Fractures in Core offers a reference for the interpretation of natural and induced fractures in cores. The natural and induced fracture data contained in cores provides a wealth of information once they are recognized and properly interpreted. Written by two experts in the field, this resource provides a much-needed tool to help with the accurate interpretation of these cores.
The authors include the information needed to identify different fracture types as well as the criteria for distinguishing between the types of fractures. The atlas shows how to recognize non-fracture artefacts in a core since many of them provide other types of useful information. In addition, the text's illustrated structures combined with their basic interpretations are designed to be primary building blocks of a complete fracture assessment and analysis. The authors show how to recognize and correctly interpret these building blocks to ensure that subsequent analyses, interpretations, and modeling efforts regarding fracture-controlled reservoir permeability are valid.
Presented in full color throughout, this comprehensive reference is written for geologists charged with interpreting fracture-controlled permeability systems in reservoirs as well as for students or other scientists who need to develop the skills to accurately interpret the natural and induced fractures in cores.
Rockbursts pose a significant and growing threat to mines—and miners—throughout North America. High stress on brittle rock structures during mining operations can produce sudden, explosive reactions that result in costly mine failures, serious injury, and even death.
Through a series of case studies, this book documents the experiences of 15 of the most rockburst-prone mines in the United States and Canada over the last century. The book provides a historical analysis of rockburst activity along with state-of-theart strategies for anticipating and preventing this dangerous and disruptive phenomenon.

Rockbolting: Principles and Applications brings current theoretical and practical developments in the most widely used support device for underground rock excavations. Today, one cannot find any rock excavation project that does not use rockbolts for rock support. The worldwide annual assumption of rockbolts is in the billions, with pieces applied to mines, tunnels and other types of geotechnical projects for rock and soil reinforcement. The text is based on over 25 years of experience of the author both as academic and practitioner.
The book introduces the principles and background concepts of rock support, and then offers a comprehensive overview of the mechanics of rockbolting, as well as current rock bolt types such as mechanical, grouted, self-drilling, grouted cables, frictional and yield rockbolts. Installation and performance assessment are covered next including load-displacement curves and energy-absorption capacities.
Two chapters on design and quality control, respectively, cover failure mechanics, the selection process and the connections with other supporting devices. On quality control, the author explains the usual tests and displacement measurements. The final chapter brings current case studies that combine the concepts presented in the whole book. The book is a professional reference for engineers in the mining and geotechnical industries and can be used as research material for academics in rock mechanics and stability studies.
Offers theoretical knowledge on rock bolts and rockbolting
Covers the standard and most recent types of rockbolts

This Practical Guide to Rock Tunneling fills an important void in the literature for a practical guide to the design and construction of tunnels in rock.

Practical Guide to Rock Tunneling takes the reader through all the critical steps of the design and construction for rock tunnels starting from geotechnical site investigations through to construction supervision. The guide provides suggestions and recommendations for practitioners on special topics of laboratory testing, durability of rock and acceptance for unlined water conveyance tunnels, overstressing or deep and long tunnels, risk-based evaluation of excavation methods, contract strategies, and post-construction inspections. Key considerations and lessons learned from selected case projects are presented based on the author’s extensive international experience of over 30 years and 1000 km of tunneling for civil, hydropower, and mining infrastructure, including some of the most recognized projects in the world to date.

Instead of revisiting all theory and concepts that can be found in other sources, this book contains the hard learned lessons from the author’s experience in the field of Rock Tunneling, gathered over 30 years of service.
Transportation Tunnels, 2nd Edition provides a comprehensive text on tunneling and tunnel engineering applicable in general to all types of tunnels, with more detailed information on highway and railway tunnels. While the First Edition of the book was confined to deal with railway and highway tunnels, the Second Edition is also extensively considering the latest trends in use of tunnels in different other fields. The book has been revised to provide coverage of water conveyance, navigation and material conveyance tunnels also and deals with these subjects in more detail.
It covers all aspects of investigation, design, construction, monitoring and maintenance of tunnels. Special emphasis has been laid on the geotechnical investigations, interpretation of findings and relating the same to the design as well as the construction of tunnels. The book reflects the advancements in the knowledge of ground behaviour and rock mechanics and also in construction technology, including use of TBM in the last two decades.
It covers in sufficient detail the basic requirements of tunnel profile, the geometric parameters, clearance requirements, aerodynamics, and cost economics in fixing alignments with different design parameters like curvature, gradient and operational requirements. It discusses in detail alternative forms of the cross section / profile and illustrates design methodology with examples.
The different methodologies that have been used in the past using timber or steel supports by stage wise expansion of cross sections and modern methodologies used for boring full profile using new tunneling methods and Tunnel Boring Machines are also comprehensively discussed.
Requirements of tunnels in respect of ventilation, lighting and drainage are adequately covered. Separate chapters have been included on ‘Instrumentation’ and ‘Tunnel Inspection and Maintenance’.
The expanded text on the use and advantages of methodologies and equipment for dealing with various aspects of construction of tunnels is based on observations through site visits, discussions with, and experiences of people as recorded on large number of tunneling works which have been taken up recently for railways, highways and urban transport subway projects.
The book can serve as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate students and as a reference book for practicing engineers.
In this book, the authors present a review of the methods used for the solution of problems of stability and support of mine workings, based on the study and analysis of the validity conditions of individual theoretical computing procedures. The classification of these methods, based on the analysis of factors determining the behaviour of a system of mine openings, should contribute to the greater objectivity of decisions connected with the management and control of mining operations and, from the educational point of view, enable the intricate problems of stability to be better understood. Chapters dealing with support structures and technologies of support review the present state of the art with special reference to problems prevailing in Europe where mining is carried out under continuously deteriorating and less favourable natural conditions. The authors have assembled the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for those to whom the book is addressed, namely, practising mining engineers and project managers, and students and graduates in mining colleges and schools.

Prepared by the Standard Design and Construction Guidelines for Microtunneling Committee of the Construction Institute of ASCE Standard Design and Construction Guidelines for Microtunneling, Standard ASCE/CI 36-15, covers the planning, design, materials, and construction for this trenchless method of installing pipelines. Microtunneling projects involve a remote-controlled boring machine, a laser guidance system, a jacking system for thrust, and continuous pressure on the face of the excavation to balance groundwater and earth pressures. The use of microtunneling has become a widely accepted means of pipeline construction, and this standard takes into account advances in technology and construction practice developed over the past 15 years. This new edition of Standard 36 expands and modifies the earlier standard so that users can better understand both the key concepts and technical details involved in a microtunneling project. The section on preparing contract documents, particularly drawings, technical specifications, and contractual specifications, has been thoroughly updated. Also revised are the qualifications of engineers who design microtunneling projects and of the contractors who construct them. New sections have been added on sustainability; regulations; detailed site investigations, especially geotechnical aspects; microtunneling design elements and operations; construction support services; and aspects of measurement and payment. Standard 36-15 is a vital reference for owners, engineers, contractors, suppliers, and manufacturers working on pipeline projects where microtunneling is an attractive option.
The present sets of papers constitutes a comprehensive synopsis of the works of Dipl. Ing. Prof. Anton Schleiss in the field of the design of pressurized shafts and tunnels liners applied to the constructio of large hydropower schemes for both universities and the design firm Electrowatt Infra now incorporated in te Jakko Poyri group.
The core of Prof. Schleiss' work was developed between the end of the 70's and the beginning of the 90's although the conclusions hereby provided can still be considered the leading edge in this field.

The ITA working group on structural design models for tunnelling will publish in 1982 the replies to a questionnaire in synopsis form. In continuation of that work thè results of an investigation imo thè most common design models for soft ground tunnels are given by way of a comparative review of progress to date in this field. The main differences in the assumptions with regard to the different models are stated. Diagrams for thè hoop forces, bending moments and radial displacements illustrate the differences in the design values evaluated for three different models — the continuum model, the Muir Wood design molivi and the bedded beam model without bedding at the crown region. A comparison with free parameters necessitates analytical solutions, so only circular crosssections are investigated. Nevertheless, the results of the investigation may also be valid for non-circular crosssections and more refined numerica! analyses. There is a trend towards agreement on thè basic assumptions and on thè design model in regard to both shallow and deep tunnels.

In a typical tunnel design in which support consists of steel sets embedded in shotcrete, the designer needs to know the contribution of each of these support elements and to be able to adjust the number and dimensions of each to accommodate the loads imposed on the lining.
In current tunnel design, these loads are obtained from numerical analyses in which “beam elements” are attached to the tunnel boundary and the axial thrust, bending moments and shear forces induced in these elements are computed directly.
Note that these beam elements constitute “tunnel support” and they interact with the surrounding rock mass to limit the convergence of the tunnel. On the other hand, rockbolts
act as “tunnel reinforcement” in that they change the mechanical properties of the rock mass surrounding the tunnel. Hence, it is possible to carry out a numerical analysis of a tunnel reinforced by means of rockbolts and supported by means of a composite lining. The loads imposed on the lining will be reduced by the reinforcement and the composite lining will respond to these reduced loads. The analysis that follows is valid whether rockbolts are present or not, provided that the numerical analysis correctly models the load transfer from the rock mass onto the lining.
