In the design and construction process, various models are used – geotechnical, laboratory, analytical, delivery, and economic models as the project is developed from planning to construction. This book explores the use and limitations of these earthwork models to be understood and appropriately applied.

This book evolved from an earthworks course to practicing engineers over a 10-year period. Theory alone is not enough. Experience alone without relating back to theory can sometimes be misleading if transferred without understanding the fundamentals. The book benefited from the experiences of those many practicing engineers and the author’s experience in multi-disciplinary consulting companies as well as specialist geotechnical companies and government departments.

The basics of soil, rock and compaction mechanics as applied to field conditions are covered. Material typically not covered in other textbooks, include the applications and limitations of associated "standard" laboratory and field testing. Specific chapters are dedicated to excavation, subgrade and expansive clay assessment and treatment. Useful design practices as well as the development and application of specifications is covered. A specification, test or design in one climatic condition or geology may not apply in another.
Design of Shallow and Deep Foundations introduces the concept of limit state calculations, before focusing on shallow and deep foundations. The limit state combinations of actions are examined, and practical calculation models of the bearing capacity and of the settlement are presented, particularly from the results of Ménard pressuremeter tests and cone penetration tests. Attention is also given to the use of numerical methods, which has been developed over the past twenty years. It provides an overview of various elements of ground-structure interaction that are pertinent for a refined design of both shallow and deep foundations, such as allowable displacements of structures, and ground-structure couplings.

Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction in Soft Ground comprises a collection of 112 papers, four general reports on the symposium themes, the Fujita Lecture, three Special Lectures and the Bright Spark Lecture presented at the Tenth International Symposium on Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction in Soft Ground, held in Cambridge, United Kingdom, 27-29 June 2022.
The symposium is the latest in a series which began in New Delhi in 1994, and was followed by symposia in London (1996), Tokyo (1999), Toulouse (2002), Amsterdam (2005), Shanghai (2008), Rome (2011), Seoul (2014) and Sao Paulo (2017). This was organised by the Geotechnical Research Group at the University of Cambridge, under the auspices of the Technical Committee TC204 of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE).
Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction in Soft Ground includes contributions from more than 25 countries on research, design and construction of underground works in soft ground. The contributions cover:

Field case studies
Sensing technologies and monitoring for underground construction in soft ground
Physical and numerical modelling of tunnels and deep excavations in soft ground
Seismic response of underground infrastructure in soft ground
Design and application of ground improvement for underground construction
Ground movements, interaction with existing structures and mitigation measures
The general reports give an overview of the papers submitted to the symposium, covered in four technical sessions. The proceedings include the written version of the five invited lectures covering topics ranging from developments in geotechnical aspects of underground construction, tunnelling and groundwater interaction (short and long-term effects), the influence of earth pressure balance shield tunnelling on pre-convergence and segmental liner loading (field observations, modelling and implications on design).
Similar to previous editions, Geotechnical Aspects of Underground Construction in Soft Ground represents a valuable source of reference on the current practice of analysis, design, and construction of tunnels and deep excavations in soft ground. The book is particularly aimed at academics and professionals interested in geotechnical and underground engineering.

Analysis and design of geotechnical structures combines, in a single endeavor, a textbook to assist students in understanding the behavior of the main geotechnical works and a guide for practising geotechnical engineers, designers, and consultants. The subjects are treated in line with limit state design, which underpins the Eurocodes and most North America design codes. Instructors and students will value innovative approaches to numerous issues refined by the experience of the author in teaching generations of enthusiastic students. Professionals will gain from its comprehensive treatment of the topics covered in each chapter, supplemented by a plethora of informative material used by consultants and designers. For the benefit of both academics and professionals, conceptual exercises and practical geotechnical design problems are proposed at the end of most chapters. A final annex includes detailed resolutions of the exercises and problems.
Piezocone and cone penetration tests (CPTu and CPT) applications in foundation engineering includes different approaches for determining the bearing capacity of shallow foundations, along with methods for determining pile bearing capacity and settlement concepts. The use of soft computing (GMDH) neural networks related to CPT records and Geotechnical parameters are also discussed. In addition, different cases regarding the behavior of foundation performance using case records, such as shallow foundation, deep soil improvement, soil behavior classification (SBC), and bearing capacity are also included.

Provides the latest on CPT and CPTu performance in geotechnical engineering, i.e., bearing capacity, settlement, liquefaction, soil classification and shear strength prediction
Introduces soft computing methods for processing soil properties and pile bearing capacity via CPT and CPTu
Explains CPT and CPTu testing methods which allows for the continuous, or virtually continuous, record of ground conditions
Free software for the design of multi-propped/anchored embedded retaining walls in Dutch or English languages.
The software works within the framework of soils elasto-plasticity (Mohr-Coulomb), using its own version of the so-called "pseudo finite-element" analysis of the soil/structure interaction.
One of the mot interesting feature of the program is that it is able to account for the properties of the uncracked and cracked sections of concrete structural members, when used as soil retaining structures (diaphragm walls and pile walls).

The foundation of a structure, such as a builing, plays a decisive role in contributing to its stability durability over its lifetime. The foundation constitutes the interface between the superstructure and the soil, thus forming a vital link which sustains the structure. The author has spent a lifetime of work on the bject of foundations. In two major works: Modern Foundations - Introducrion to Advanced Techniques and Design of Foundation Systems - Priciples and Practices he has presented the results of his extensive research and practical experience in this field. The author's special attention, from the beginning, was focused on the ore recent and lesser known technique of deploying shells in foundations. Shell forms generally allow the of only minimal materials for maximum functionality and this holds true for foundations of structures as well. They are therefore particularly important in regions where economical requirements, such as increased expenditure on human labour in relation ·to reduced expenditure on materials, play a major role. I had the pleasant opportunity of working in the field of shell foundations together with the author at the Tecnical University of Berlin, and during this time I was convinced of the capabilities and efficiency of foundations of this type. I am extremely pleased to find that Prof. Nainan P. Kurian, in this book, has dealt with the ubject in a detailed, systematic and in-depth manner, and, as such, I have no doubt that it will attract the wide readership it richly deserves.
This book is about geoplasticity, solid mechanics of rock, jointed rock and soil beyond the domain of a purely elastic deformation. Plastic deformation is irreversible and begins at the limit to elasticity with any attempt at further loading. Stress at the limit to elasticity is "strength" which is described by a functional relationship amongst stresses, that is, by a yield function or failure criterion. Mohr-Coulomb, Drucker-Prager and Hoek-Brown criteria are well-known examples in geomechanics
