The seismic behavior of full-scale bridge columns designed based on current Caltrans practice is being investigated using the UCSD shake table as part of an extensive test program with E-Defense (Japan) and UC Berkeley in an effort to improve current bridge design and analysis practices.
This investigation will obtain, interpret and disseminate the first shake table results for full-scale bridge columns detailed consistent with current Caltrans design practice. Under the auspices of the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), the Department of Transportation of California (Caltrans) and the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) program; and industry sponsorships from Skanska and the Concrete and Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI), this research project plans on testing a 1.2 m diameter bridge column with a mass of 250 ton placed atop, in order to mobilize inertial forces.

The column will be densely instrumented to obtain high quality data and tested under various earthquake ground motions, including motions of severe intensity demanding large inelastic response. Results of the test program will be compared with results of recent shake table testing of full-scale bridge columns performed in Japan at the E-Defense test facility and with shake table results from reduced-scale tests to be carry out at the University of California at Berkeley.

Combined with analytical simulations, the results will also provide a critically needed assessment of the adequacy of reduced-scale models and tests conducted at altered strain states. These will deliver the missing data required to increase the confidence in the current analysis methods and validate (or improve) present design practices. The testing will be carried out at the UCSD Large Outdoor Shake Table Testing Facility and is scheduled to run from July through September of 2010.
Revit is a great program for structural engineering, offering cutting-edge tools for designing solid structures and publishing clear, easy-to-share documentation. This course focuses on the major components of Revit 2022 used for structural design, featuring examples in metric units (meters). Instructor Eric Wing explains how to start a project and set up structural views; add foundations, reinforcing, and steel and concrete framing; model slabs and trusses; and build a whole lot more. He also helps you create detailed, annotated documentation for sharing and use in construction. The course is designed for members with no Revit experience, or for more advanced users who want to jump to a topic and start from there. Either way, this comprehensive course can teach you what you need to know to be dangerous in Revit structure.
Structures require a complete load path to maintain stability. Load paths connect each point of load application to a point of resistance. In seismic design, every element with mass is considered a point of application and the foundation is considered the point of resistance. This presentation focuses on seismic load path and the role of diaphragms and their components, including chords, collectors, and collector connections. Foundation issues are discussed and the concept of deformation compatibility of the entire structure is presented.
This presentation addresses the derivation of design forces for braced-frame beams and their connections for various loading conditions including wind and seismic loads. In particular, the presentation focuses on the combination of frame-design and diaphragm-design forces. The presentation gives a methodology for determining consistent sets of design forces based on increasing levels of complexity. Emphasis will be placed on clear free body diagrams and consistent sets of forces corresponding to clear and understandable load conditions for the frame.
Schedules are management tools that allow leaders to make informed decisions about activities on a construction site. Although the terms planning and scheduling are often used interchangeably, there is a significant difference between these two activities, and an accurate schedule cannot be developed without first developing a proper plan. Planning activities involve developing the logic of how a project is to be constructed—beginning with the construction documents that define the end product, and then identifying the individual tasks or steps required to arrive at this end result. Scheduling consists of integrating the plan with a calendar or time period, and assigning time durations and resources to each task.

This course identifies the steps needed to develop a proper plan, and demonstrates how that plan is transformed into a construction schedule. Throughout the course, instructor Jim Rogers shares examples of his own successes and failures in the areas of construction planning and scheduling, so as to lend real-world context to the concepts he covers.

Topics include:
-Types of schedules
-Planning versus scheduling
-Work breakdown structure
-Developing a schedule
-Creating a network model
-Assigning durations, costs, and resources
-Identifying the critical path
-Letting the software do the calculations
-Checking and updating the schedule
-Scheduling's impact on productivity
While manufacturing has realized substantial gains in productivity, the construction industry hasn't seen notable improvements in productivity over the past few decades. Lean productivity—a tried and tested continual improvement process leveraged in manufacturing—contains elements that lend themselves to being ported over to the construction process. In this course, explore the lean theory of production and learn how it can be successfully adopted in construction to enhance efficiency. Instructor Jim Rogers provides a brief introduction to the theory of lean productivity, describing key concepts and explaining how lean applies to construction. Jim then spells out the changes that need to occur in order for lean to be successfully adopted in the construction industry.

Topics include:
- What is lean?
- Embracing lean productivity
- Construction vs. manufacturing
- How does lean apply to construction?
- Identifying and minimizing waste
- Training and empowering front-line field personnel
- Understanding the pull planning method
- Continuous improvement
In this set of tutorials you'll learn how to draw a stair detail in AutoCAD. We'll begin the project by using Polylines to draw the basic form of the treads. Once we have the form in place we'll then draw the stringers and landing. We'll finish out the drawing by adding some handrails and balusters as well as text and dimensions. While working with our drawing we'll be sure to adhere to the code requirements which can be found in the International Building Code. By the end of this training you'll have a solid understanding of what it takes to draw a professional looking and code compliant stair detail for your permit set of drawings.
A large structure can be challenging to build, but it can be done. In this course, you'll learn to use Reference Line-Sketch Block method and Solid Body part modeling techniques to bolt together a power line tower. Software required: SOLIDWORKS.

Creating large structures from the part level up to an assembly can be a challenge. If the structure has uncommon angles or needs to change size or shape, then every part needs to be individually changed, too, which may be time-consuming and error-prone. In this course, SOLIDWORKS: Weldments in Assemblies, you will learn how to apply SolidWorks Weldments in a multibody part file referencing various forms of sketch reference geometry in the modeling of a power line tower leg. First, you'll learn how to import a design sketch. After that, you'll learn how to apply new weldment profiles and how to modify your existing model. Finally, you'll wrap up the course learning about inserting weldments and how you cut lists into a drawing. By the end of this course, you'll have the skills required to make to quickly and efficiently use design sketches to drive the geometry of your models. Software required: SOLIDWORKS.
