Hi All,

I am wondering if this has been discussed before or not, but I am interested in seeing how you guys make decisions regarding the structural systems you use in the project.

If we considered just basic structural systems such as RC moment frame/ RC shear walls/ Steel moment frames/ Braced steel frames (EBF/CBF). How do you choose between these systems and how do you develop the preliminary/concept model?

Is there any book you recommended regarding developing the conceptual/Preliminary structural models?

Regards,

Dear Civilean

For mat foundation most of time we got its thickness from punching check (two way shear) , no one care about one way shear check in mat foundation at least this is what I observed by reading tons of books! is kind of that they tell you that for mat foundation if punching is ok then the one way shear also will be ok.

My question is what about piled raft foundation, do we need to check one way shear? if yes, how we can check it ? is it ok to just take the entire width of mat for checking one way shear as ACI mentioned? or we need to check it through stress evaluation inside the piled raft? or if we checked the punching and the flexural reinforcement be reasonable for selected thickness, that is all we need.

Most of piled raft design references concentrate on interaction between piles piles, raft piles, piles soil, raft soils, and have no information about how to calculate thickness for piled raft foundation system ! so please if you know a good reference for it tell me, thanks

Dear engineers,
I want to discuss what is the best program or excel sheet for calculating the slab punching shear as per ACI 318, since PROKO software gives error calculations and calculates the shear reinforcement in a stupid way and does not match with code formulas & CSi SAFE has some bugs in checking the adequacy of the slab's effective depth.
thx

Nowruz (Persian: نوروز‎, pronounced [nowˈɾuːz]; lit. 'new day') is the Iranian New Year, also known as the Persian New Year, which begins on the Spring equinox,[26] marking the first day of Farvardin, the first month of the Iranian solar calendar. It is celebrated worldwide by various ethno-linguistic groups, and falls on or around March 21 of the Gregorian calendar. Nowruz falls on March 20 in 2021.

Nowruz has Iranian and Zoroastrian origins; however, it has been celebrated by diverse communities for over 3,000 years in Western Asia, Central Asia, the Caucasus, the Black Sea Basin, the Balkans, and South Asia. It is a secular holiday for most celebrants that is enjoyed by people of several different faiths, but remains a holy day for Zoroastrians, Baháʼís, and some Muslim communities.

As the vernal equinox, Nowruz marks the beginning of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator and equalizes night and day is calculated exactly every year, and families gather together to observe the rituals.

While Nowruz has been celebrated since the reform of the Iranian Calendar in the 11th century CE to mark the new year, the United Nations officially recognized the "International Day of Nowruz" with the adoption of UN resolution 64/253 in 2010.
