Since its early days, many expected BIM (building information modeling) to be replaced or superseded by the next bright, shiny object--but that hasn't happened yet. While it has matured from its early days and is now seen as an everyday occurrence, it's still somehow shrouded in confusion and questions.

A key issue is a simple lack of references, a feeling of being out in the woods without a map to get you where you want to go. That's not to say there are no references. There are actually quite a few BIM manuals, guidebooks, and introductions, but many are, to put it politely, not terribly accessible, and none of them are specific to the steel construction industry.

AISC's BIM & VDC for Structural Steel and its newly released companion, Model Review and Approval, are geared specifically toward the structural steel design community. And yes, that's two acronyms in one title; the latter stands for virtual design and construction. These free guides will not only provide an introduction to BIM, but also address issues that affect the design and fabrication of structural steel

Abstract: Common approaches to compute the yield and buckling resistances of gusset plates require knowledge of the lengths yc, ycf , yb, ybf, L1, L2, and L3, (Figures 2 and 7). While numerical values for these resistances have been presented in the literature, formulas for yc, ycf , yb, ybf, L1, L2, and L3 have not been published. This paper presents the derivation and validation of equations to compute these lengths. The equations are summarized in flow charts that can be incorporated into software for practical applications. 2020 AISC Seismic Provisions for Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Structural Steel Buildings (ANSI/AISC 342-20)

The American Institute of Steel Construction invites comments on the current draft of a new standard that will apply to the retrofit of structural steel buildings subjected to seismic loading.

The document is available for public review until May 20, 2019.

The new standard, Seismic Provisions for Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Structural Steel Buildings (AISC 342), is intended to be used in conjunction with ASCE/SEI 41, as a replacement to Chapter 9 of that document.

The standard describes requirements for certification of firms that shop apply complex painting systems.

According to Michael Damiano, Director of Product Development at SSPC, “The strength of this standard is that it enables paint shops and steel fabricators to meet the qualification criteria of two major organizations at one time, while giving owners and specifiers a single governing document to reference.”

Jacques Cattan, VP of Certification for AISC added, “The jointly sponsored certification will confirm to owners, the design community, and the construction industry that a firm has knowledgeable personnel and the organization, experience, procedures, and equipment to provide surface preparation and application of complex painting systems in a shop facility according to contract specifications.”

The joint standard is available now for free download on AISC’s website at aisc.org/JointPaintStandard and SSPC’s website at sspc.org/market-place, for inclusion into project specifications and contract documents. Starting on June 1, 2011, participants will only be responsible for the criteria of the current standards but will be informed of changes or possible non-conformances that will take effect with the new joint standard during their next annually scheduled audit. Full implementation of the new joint standard will be complete in 2012.

(Chicago, IL) - The new AISC standard for steel bridge fabricator certification is available for free downloading on the AISC web site at aisc.org/specifications (under Certification Standards at the bottom of the web page). Formally titled AISC Certification Program for Steel Bridge Fabricators—Standard for Steel Bridges—2011 (AISC 205-11), the standard outlines three categories of fabricator certification based on three types of bridges: simple, intermediate, and advanced. The standard also includes requirements for a fracture-critical member certification endorsement.

The new standard is the culmination of several years of work by the AISC Certification Committee and its ad hoc bridge standard task group. It is modeled after the format of the AISC certification standard for structural steel building fabricators and the certification standard for bridge component manufacturers.

“This standard promotes a system-based approach to achieving quality in bridge fabrication,” noted Charles J. Carter, S.E., P.E., Ph.D., AISC vice president and chief structural engineer. “Owners, general contractors and engineers who work with AISC-certified steel fabricators will benefit because this approach is more economical than the costs that often result from fixing what is found after trying to inspect quality into the product later.”

The standard is available as a free download at aisc.org/specifications (under Certification Standards at the bottom of the web page). The AISC Certification program expects to incorporate the new standard into its bridge fabricator certification program, replacing the current checklist-based certification program, over the next 24 months.
