RE: Design of 5,000 Gal. Elevated Tank ( conical bottom ) using Staad Pro. - ASEC - 03-12-2011

Just a couple of observations that you need to correct with your model.

1.You have duplicate nodes in the model, if not corrected you will get erroneous load transfer

2. Improperly connected plates, same consequence as item 1

3. Weight of Water has not been considered in the primary load case dead load

4. Should also be checked with Wind Load

5. Worst condition for Earthquake and Wind Loads should be checked when tank is full and when tank is empty.

6. Rw value should conform to the code you are using UBC or ASCE

7. You have specifiy "tension member" for some members, tension or compression member is a non-linear member you should use them with primary load case and not load combination. Hence, use repeat load command . refer to staad manual for further info.

8. You execute two designs for steel members using ASD and LRFD but using factored load combinations which is not applicable to ASD. You should create two load envelopes one for service load for ASD and another load envelop for LRFD.

9. Better use p-dleta analysis to consider secondary moments.

Just correct the above and you are in the right direction.
