Blast effects on buildings: Design of buildings to optimize resistance to blast loading
Thomas Telford Publications | English | ISBN 0727720309 | 516 pages | PDF | 11.66 MB | 1995

This book is aimed at all engineers and architects involved in the design of building structures, and should enable them to have a better understanding of their own and their client's responsibilities in providing buildings which, in the event of an explosion, minimize damage to people and property.

Following this introduction putting the subject in context, the book starts with some basic guidelines for enhancing the resilience of buildings to blast loading (Chapter 2). An explanation of the nature of explosions and the mechanism of blast waves in free air is then given. This leads to a discussion of the loading that explosions place on structures, both inside and out, and the concept of an idealized loading is introduced (Chapter 3). The response of buildings, people and equipment to blast loading is illustrated. A method of analysis is suggested whereby the strain energy absorbed is equated to the work done or kinetic energy imparted and the structure reduced to a single degree of freedom (Chapter 4).

Product Description:
Blast effects on buildings, second edition provides the latest practical guidance on designing buildings to optimise their resilience to blast loading. Focused specifically on the design of commercial buildings, it is an indispensable guide to help engineers reduce the risks posed to building occupants and businesses from terrorist and other explosions.
Blast Effect on Buildings
FIRST edition - by GC Mays

Product Description
This guide explains the approach to the design of buildings to optimize their resistance and to provide simple techniques for maximizing the potential of a building to give protection against explosive effects. It incorporates the following key features: design objectives concerning the protection of people and equipment, and the minimizing of damage to buildings; basic guidelines for enhancing the resilience of buildings to blast loading; and methods for the design of buildings and using different construction materials. It also incorporate: the nature of explosions and the mechanism of blast wave propagation in free air; the issues concerning the protection of buildings against terrorist explosives; the response of buildings, humans and equipment to blast loading; a method of analysis using a single degree of freedom approach leading to conservative design; and a summary of the implications of the foregoing for building operation.
