BS 6349-1:2000 Maritime structures. Code of practice for general criteria
This part of BS 6349 gives guidance and recommendations on general criteria relevant to the planning, design, construction and maintenance of structures set in the maritime environment.

This British Standard is arranged on a topical basis. Section 2 discusses environmental factors, in which the environment is taken in its broader sense to include all naturally occurring phenomena likely to be found at a coastal site and guidance is given on methods of investigating and quantifying their effects. Section 3 gives prominence to the need to consider operational requirements throughout the planning of maritime works, although only limited guidance is given on some general aspects because the detailed functional requirements of individual structures are beyond the scope of this part of this code. Section 4 discusses sea state and gives guidance on the characteristics, prediction, recording and effect of waves. Section 5 deals with the selection and evaluation of design loadings arising from the environmental and operational effects discussed in the previous sections, taking due account of dynamic response and fatigue. Section 6 discusses geotechnical aspects, including ground investigations, soil parameters, and geotechnical design requirements. Section 7 gives guidance on the use and specification of appropriate materials and protective measures.

This Part of BS 6349 also gives recommendations to assist clients and engineers to obtain the basic data relevant to the design of any maritime structure.

BS 6349-2:1988 Maritime works. Code of practice for the design of quay walls, jetties and dolphins
BS 6349-2 provides recommendations and guidance on the design of quay walls, jetties and dolphins.

This is a full revision of BS 6349-2 and introduces the following principal changes:

Substantial reference to Eurocodes and other European standards published since the previous edition of BS 6349-2
Some rationalization arising from the publication of BS 6349-8, which now deals with all issues associated with Ro-Ro ramps, linkspans and walkways
Change of title from Maritime structures to Maritime works to reflect the expanded remit of the new Technical Committee that is responsible for this series. The titles of the other parts will be changed as revisions or amendments are published.
BS 6349-2:2010 replaces BS 6349-2:1988, which is now withdrawn.

BS 6349-3:1988 Maritime structures. Design of dry docks, locks, slipways and shipbuilding berths, shiplifts and dock and lock gates

BS 6349-4:1994 Maritime structures. Code of practice for design of fendering and mooring systems

BS 6349-5:1991 Maritime structures. Code of practice for dredging and land reclamation

BS 6349-6:1989 Maritime structures. Design of inshore moorings and floating structures

BS 6349-7:1991 Maritime structures. Guide to the design and construction of breakwaters

BS 6349-8:2007 Maritime structures. Code of practice for the design of Ro-Ro ramps, linkspans and walkways
This part of BS 6349 gives recommendations for the design of roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) ramps, linkspans and walkways, used for the transfer of passengers and vehicles between shore and ship.

It applies to the structural elements only and does not cover the design of any operational equipment, traffic control, mechanical or electrical equipment, heating, lighting, life saving or rescue equipment other than as the structures forming a facility need to incorporate and/or support any of these features. Most geometrical aspects of fixed shore ramps are covered in this part of BS 6349, but recommendations for all other aspects are given in BS 6349-2.

This part of BS 6349 does not apply to Ro-Ro facilities used by rail vehicles in that it does not give recommendations for railway loading and associated ramp gradients. However, many of its recommendations are applicable to rail Ro-Ro facilities and can be used in the absence of other guidance.

NOTE This part of BS 6349 is generally intended to cover facilities constructed in the British Isles. Although the majority of the contents are directly applicable elsewhere, local conditions might necessitate modifications, e.g. environmental effects and traffic loading.
