The UK highways bridge stock is exhibiting durability problems. While there are several causes of deterioration, many of the problems are attributed to poor detailing and a lack of appreciation of buildability by designers. There are many sources of advice on bridge detailing but the advice is rarely collected together. Most available professional information comes as advice incidental to particular projects or subjects. The "bridge detailing guide" gives guidance for engineers and technicians engaged in the preparation and development of details for highway and accommodation bridges, subways, culverts and retaining walls. The guide concentrates on the detailing issues that follow conceptual and analytical design. It also covers some design issues, such as access during and after construction and CDM requirements, due to their direct relevance to the detailing stage. The guide explores basic principles, that have proved to be reliable in everyday use, in terms of durability and ease of construction, inspection, maintenance and repair. The guide is intended as a live document and will be revised and extended as a result of feedback by the industry. A formal feedback procedure is, therefore, included. A CD-ROM is also provided with the report. This holds the "details" in CAD format. This guide is essential reading for consultants, contractors, bridge owners and their maintaining agents.

Bridge Design for improved buildability CIRIA

This work guides bridge designers, working for either the owner or a constructor, on how to improve the buildability of common highway bridge structures. Checklists of actions provide a reminder of "conceptual" and "specific" issues related to design for buildability and can be extended to suit individual projects.

CIRIA C519 Action in the case of nonconformity of concrete structures

Sets out basic principles for dealing with nonconformities. These provide a rational framework against which nonconformities can be verified/investigated, their significance can be assessed, appropriate remedies can be considered and recurrence can be avoided. Six key areas in which nonconformities frequently occur have been targeted in this report. These are: cover, inherent concrete quality, cracking, surface finishes, honeycombing and surface damage, and dimensional nonconformity. The report incorporates inter alia: flow charts setting out the decision-making process for dealing with the six types of nonconformity; lists of prompts for consideration when carrying out investigations or when selecting appropriate remedies; and typical examples of nonconformities. General advice on specifying to reduce nonconformities and avoid disputes is also provided.

This guide provides a method for estimating the magnitude of crack-inducing strain and the risk of cracking; and where cracking is predicted guidance is provided on the design of reinforcement to control crack widths. For specific situations where cracking should be avoided, or where the use of reinforcement to achieve acceptable crack widths is uneconomic or impractical, measures are described to minimise the risk including selection of materials and mix design, planning pour sizes and construction sequence, the use of insulation to reduce thermal gradients, the use of movement joints, and cooling of the concrete either prior to placing or in situ.
