The Code for Sustainable Homes provides an environmental assessment methodology for certifying the performance of new homes in England and Wales. It encourages a ‘step change’ in building practice that includes energy efficiency as a key element. Buildings are rated on a scale from Level 1 to Level 6,
where Level 6 is the highest.

Since May 2008 it is mandatory for all new homes to be rated (not necessarily assessed) against the Code. Buildings that are not assessed under the Code are awarded a ‘nil-rated’ certificate.
