This volume is from the "Mechanical Vibration and Shock" five-volume study. The relative and absolute response of a mechanical system to one degree with freedom is considered for arbitrary excitation, and its transfer function defined in various forms. The characteristics of sinusoidal vibration are placed in the context both of the real world and of laboratory tests, and transient and steady state response of the single-degree-of-freedom system. First viscous damping and then non-linear damping is considered. The various types of sine-sweep and their properties are described and, for the one-degree-of-freedom system, the consequences of an inappropriate choice of sweep rate are considered. From the latter, rules governing the choice of suitable sweep rates are developed.

This five-volume set lays down the theoretical basis for the specification and testing of international standards related to product design. Manufactured product has to be designed to withstand the effects of the environmental factors (temperature, humidity) and also the effects of externally imposed mechanical shocks and vibrations, which might result in fatigue and other damage. This has given rise to the concept of the tailorization of product, leading to the tailorization of tests. Tailorization implies not only an understanding of the effects of the environment, but also presupposes proper understanding of the mechanical systems subjected to mechanical loads, and knowledge of the most frequent failure modes. This is implemented by the use of a simple theoretical model, enabling the effects of shocks and vibrations to be assessed, and the drafting of specifications, pre-sizing calculations and the establishment of rules for analysis and definitions of tests to be developed. Throughout, the theoretical treatments are placed in the context of the real environment and of laboratory tests - essential for the development of standards. The series culminates, in Volume V, in the development of specifications.

Christian Lallane is an expert specialist at the French Atomic Energy Authority, who has specialised in the study of vibration and shock for more than thirty years. The author of numerous publications in this field, he has been associated with the new methods of drafting testing specifications and associated informatic tools.
