CIRIA summary: This document provides guidance on best practice for safe working in the investigation of landfills and contaminated land. The document first outlines the considerations that need to be addressed before commencing a site investigation (Chapter 2), the contractual requirements (Chapter 3), the bill of quantities (Chapter 4) and insurance (Chapter 5). As part of health and safety, Chapter 4 discusses hazard assessment including categorisation of the site (green, yellow or red site), and the implications for landfill gases and other contaminants. Chapter 5 discusses further aspects of health and safety including preparation, safety plans, site practice, plant and equipment, recognition and treatment of hazards, and personal responsibilities. Personnel requirements from the driller to the environmental scientist are discussed in Chapter 8; field operations are discussed in Chapter 9 and protective clothing and equipment are described in Chapter 10. The Appendices cover boring and drilling plant methods; additional items in the Bill of Quantities; site categorisation; assessment of potentially hazardous sites; site designation/ safety equipment; protective clothing; and membership of the Steering Group.
