Closure Strip Strategies
Closure strips are temporary gaps in reinforced concrete floor slabs. They are provided to allow sections on either side to undergo shrinkage independently; however, only limited guidance is available for their design. This article summarizes currently available design approaches, presents a case study of closure strip monitoring, and compares the obtained field data with predictions from the available design approaches.
Design of Reinforcement for Pile Caps
Foundations supporting pipe racks and open frame structures used in the petrochemical industry are often subjected to uplift forces. Simplified strut-and-tie models suitable for reinforcement design for pile caps subjected to axial tension or bending moment are presented. Models include the most common configurations of pile caps currently used—pile caps supported by two and four piles.
2016 PCI Design Awards
The Annual Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (PCI) Design Awards represent design excellence and construction quality using precast concrete. Winning projects for 2016 in the transportation design category are presented. Judging categories included bridges with spans over 150 ft (46 m), non-highway bridges, and rehabilitated bridges.
Slag Cement Association 2016 Project of the Year Awards
The Slag Cement Association (SCA) presented the Slag Cement 2016 Project of the Year Awards during the meeting of ACI Committee 233, Ground Slag in Concrete, at The ACI Concrete Convention and Exposition – Spring 2017 in Detroit, MI. Eight projects were recognized for excellence and innovation in concrete using slag cement in the categories of Architectural Design, Durability, Green Design, High Performance, Sustainability, and a new category—Innovative Applications.
Congratulations, 2017 Long-Time Members of ACI

Concrete Q&A: Subgrade Drag Equation in ACI 360R
Equation (6.3) in ACI 360R-921 is not included in the current version of this document (ACI 360R-102). What was the reason for this change? Also, what reinforcement percentage is needed to limit crack widths and ensure aggregate interlock?
