Analysis of possible use of pyrolytic products as binders in asphalt mixes

  • Abstract: New binders are produced in order to reduce dependence on crude oil. This study aims to evaluate pyrolytic products and their blends with bitumen, as a possible substitution for bitumen. Bitumen of the penetration grade 70/100 was used as a matrix for the blends. Standard test were conducted in order to determine mechanical properties of the reference bitumen, pyrolytic products, and their blends.
    The results obtained during this study indicate that pyrolytic products can be used as a substitution for bitumen originating from crude oil or, in proper proportions, as an additive to that bitumen.

Deformation characteristics of aluminium alloys

  • Abstract:
    The utilisation of aluminium alloys in structural applications requires knowledge of their characteristics in the elastoplastic area. The deformation of alloys in this area can be described by the Ramberg-Osgood's equation. Tensile test results for AW-5083 and AW-2024 alloys are presented, and it is confirmed that strain hardening can reliably be described with Hollomon equation. Ramberg-Osgood equations are derived for these two alloys based on strain hardening indicators.

    Determination of seismic performance is a significant task in the performancebased seismic analysis of structures. The consistency between analysis results obtained according to various codes is highly significant for seismic evaluation of structures. Non-linear performance of three reinforced concrete buildings having a soft storey irregularity is studied based on the finite elements analysis according to FEMA-356, FEMA-440, and Turkish Earthquake Code - 2007. Damage situations, modal properties, storey drift ratios, and global performance levels are comparatively presented for each structure, and appropriate suggestions are given.

  • Abstract: This paper presents the effects of long-term exposure of concrete structures to marine environment using as an example concrete blocks of a pier exposed to seawater for more than three decades. The blocks were tested to determine their mechanical characteristics (compressive strength), durability (gas permeability and capillary absorption), homogeneity (sclerometer rebound and ultrasound passage velocity) and chemical properties (quantity of chloride and sulphate ions). In addition, concrete behaviour in sea water was modelled using software packages Stadium and Conclife.

Shape optimisation of concrete open spandrel arch bridges

  • Abstract: An open spandrel arch bridge is analysed in this paper. A computer code is written to create a model from geometrical data, so as to solve the optimisation problem. An optimum design procedure is conducted in the paper, and the total material volume of the bridge substructure is adopted as an objective function. The substructure includes the column and the reinforced-concrete arch. Finally, the optimization technique is implemented using the Simultaneous Perturbation Stochastic Approximation algorithm.

Load-bearing capacity of fire exposed composite columns

  • Abstract: The cross-section load-bearing capacity of three types of fire exposed steel-concrete composite columns is analysed in this paper, and the results are compared with the load-bearing capacity of a reference reinforced-concrete column. Mechanical properties of constitutive materials are reduced considerably by high temperatures caused by fire action, which results in a reduced load bearing capacity of columns with regard to the longitudinal force and biaxial bending moment. The reduced load bearing capacity of analysed columns subjected to elevated temperatures is expressed through changes in the M-N interaction curves.

  • Abstract: The behaviour of RC beams strengthened with precast RC plates of rectangular and U cross-section is studied in the paper. An experimental investigation was conducted to assess effectiveness of strengthening with precast plates. The investigation was supported with the 2-D nonlinear finite element analysis (NLFEA). The NLFEA results showed a good level of correlation with test results. The proposed technique is considered to be a good alternative to RC jacketing and the technique is practical, economical and reliable for buildings or bridges with a greater number sisof similar beams

Influence of spatial variability of ground motion on seismic response of bridges

  • Abstract: An approach to seismic analysis of bridges under spatially variable ground motions is
    presented. The phenomenon of spatial variability of earthquakes, its effects on bridge
    response, and differences with respect to simultaneous excitation of supports, are
    explained. The model of such excitation is described in detail, and procedures for generation
    of spatially variable ground motions are outlined. Numerical analysis methods, efficient
    for solving this problem, are also presented. The described methodology is applied in the
    seismic analysis of an arch bridge. The analysis results show that the spatial variability of
    ground motions has a detrimental effect on most of the analysed bridge response values.

  • Abstract: A newly developed numerical model for the analysis of stress-ribbon bridges under the short-term (static and dynamic) and long-term loads and actions is presented in the paper. The model can simulate main nonlinear effects of the behaviour of these structures, including nonlinear behaviour of materials, change in the structure geometry, phased construction, prestressing, etc. Basic solutions for the stress-ribbon bridge over the Cetina River near Zadvarje, and some results of its analysis using the developed numerical model, are presented.
